Japan to install new surveillance cameras at airports

Tokyo, April 3 (IANS) The Japanese government on Monday announced that it would install new video surveillance cameras at several airports as part of heightened security measures for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Summer Games.

Airport authorities had demanded the installation of surveillance cameras to be able to better monitor the perimetres, Efe news reported.

The ministry of land, infrastructure, transport and tourism planned to install surveillance cameras in 15 state-run airports, which would operate alongside existing ones in major airports such as Haneda and Narita in Tokyo.

The government was also preparing to set up an anti-terror coordination centre, which would involve all ministries to ensure security at airports and the residential quarters of athletes.

These measures come after the government passed a controversial bill last month penalising criminal conspiracies with the aim of combating terror ahead of the Olympics.
