Jazz band ‘Wick’ raise Awareness on Pollution

Mangaluru: Doctor or Musician, which career would you choose? But in the case of ‘WICK’ band members, they have chosen both the careers- to be Doctors, as well as a part-time Musicians. Because they feel that the joy in writing music and creating something new, when you sit down with a few friends and put together a few notes and a rhythm there’s just magic. Then getting to perform, to show others what you have made – it’s incredible. You’re terrified because you’re showing your deepest emotions and they might be rejected, but you’re thrilled because you have an excuse to be completely yourself. And these guys are doing absolutely great when they perform live on stage – they got the rhythm, they got the style and they got the charisma- and they are doing it for a good cause, by raising voice against pollution through their music.
‘Wick’ a Musical Band made up of medicos and other student musicians of Mangaluru are all set to raise its voice against pollution in association with Anti-Pollution Drive (APD) Foundation. The band, who are ever ready to put their weight behind a good cause, this time, chose APD Foundation to carry out musical activism and raise awareness about air pollution. The band which is known for playing Jazz and Rock Blues has joined hands with APD and Antony Waste Handling Cell., to popularise waste segregation in the city. The band members are ferocious in their belief that music is an extremely strong driver of social change and recognise the effect it can have on its audience and fans. They performed today, 24 July for a large audience of youth at ‘Spindrift’ located atop Bharath Mall.
Air Pollution, the silent killer, is today considered to be one of the major causes of death and many life threatening diseases, affecting vital parts of the human body. Air Pollution is ranked as one of the largest killer in our country and is one of the main contributing causes of Asthma in most children and adults. Ailments such as Emphysema, Chronic Bronchitis, and several other respiratory related difficulties are attributed to air pollution. It is well known that prolonged exposure to air pollution can also result in lung cancer and heart attacks.
The biggest threat to our planet is the hope that someone else will save it. We are living on the planet in such a way as if we have another one to go. Air pollution is an incurable disease. It can only be prevented, and most of all it is a collective job. So, why not be a volunteer and join hands with APD Foundation to stop those polluting our air and help others lead a healthier life. It is undoubtedly sure that every one of us individually, are dangerously in contact with pollutants by virtue of the nature of our work while commuting around the city and therefore reduction of pollution is immensely important to us and to the general public.
Speaking to Team Mangalorean, Dr George Jacob, lead vocalist of the band said: “Pollution and waste management have a huge social dimension. Citizen’s participation is very important for eradicating these problems. Music has the power to attract such an involvement from the public. “Waste management is a cross-cutting issue interlinked with many aspects of society and our country’s economy. It has strong linkages to a range of other global challenges such as health, climate change, poverty reduction, food and resource security and sustainable production and consumption. These issues have to be tackled jointly and we are anticipating diligent participation from each individual” said Abdullah A Rehman, Founder APD Foundation. “All the high nutrient waste which are generated from ‘Spindrift’ are sent to the farms for animal feed and we are working towards and hoping to achieve 100% segregation in our premises,” said Sharan Shetty of ‘Spindrift’
As their contribution to the partnership, the band plays at popular youth hot-spots and spreads the message. Funds raised on the occasion are donated to the NGO for utilisation towards the caring for the environment. The band had already successfully played for APD at a few events. Entertainment value aside, great social change has come about across the globe on account of musicians taking a stand. The musicians cite examples of musical activism and several bands working towards various noble causes across the country and making a difference in the society.
