Kambala Committee with Tulu Film Industry form human chain against ban on Kambala
Mangaluru: The Kambala committee in Association with the students fraternity and the Tulu film industry jointly staged a protest and formed a human chain at the Hampankatta main circle here on January 27.
Addressing the protesters MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said, “Kambala is a traditional sport of Tulunadu and the PETA without understanding the difference between Jalikattu and Kambala had filed a petition to ban Kambala. There is no cruelty towards animals during the Kambala. Students power is nation’s power and today all the students have boycotted the classes and supported us. We all should join hands and intensify our Protest until the ban on Kambala is lifted”.
Speaking on the occasion, Kambala committee president Barkur Shantharam Shetty said, “There is a difference between Kambala and Jallikattu. There is no death of any buffaloes in the history of Kambala nor has any person died. But in Jallikattu many people have died and the buffaloes have been injured. When the Supreme court put a ban on Jallikattu, the entire Tamil Nadu got down to the streets and protested to lift the ban as Jallikattu was their tradition. Kambala is also the tradition of Tulunadu and it has more than 1000 years of history. If the government can lift the ban and make Jallikattu legal why then is the ban on Kambala not lifted? We need to intensify our protest like the one done in Tamil Nadu. On January 28, we will hold a protest in Moodbidri in which more than 200 pairs of buffaloes will be taken in a procession.”
Member of the Kambala Committee Satyajit Suratkal said, “Kambala is the traditional sport of Coastal Karnataka. The PETA has compared Kambala with Jallikattu. So far no one has died during the Kambala and there is no cruelty against the buffaloes during the Kambala. The owners take special care of the Buffaloes. Now there is an attempt to attack the religious sentiments of the people of DK, attack on the culture and the land of agriculture. Kambala is a part and parcel of Tulunadu. The government is trying to acquire the land of the farmers so that they can start industries in DK. We will fight until the ban on Kambala is lifted.”
Naveen D Padil speaking on the occasion said, “We should not give up out traditional sports Kambala, when we see Jallikattu we feel like pelting stones but when we see Kambala we feel like loving the Buffaloes”. He urged the government should put a ban on PETA and said, “We all should join hands to retain the Kambala”.
President of Mangaluru Catholic Sabha Anil D’Souza rendered his support on behalf of the diocese of Mangaluru to retain the Kambala.
Film Star Avinash from Bengaluru speaking on the occasion said, “I am seeing the youth power here. Youth can bring changes if they pledge, because when we were in the college we were fighting for justice. Students should be united and pressurise the government to lift the ban on Kambala. Let us all be united and fight to lift the ban on Kambala. Let we all show our unity to retain our traditional sports Kambala”.
