Karkala: ‘I will never allow the creation of a tiger reserve in Kudremukh’ – Ramanath Rai

Karkala: “Truth will prevail on the alleged ban on arecanut and such other lies,” said Ramanath Rai, Minister for Forests, Environment and Ecology. He was speaking after inaugurating the 61st Wildlife Week organized by Kudremukh Wildlife Division at the Galaxy Auditorium, Karkala here, on October 1.

The report of the cabinet sub-committee on the Kasturirangan report was submitted to the central government, but the central government has issued a draft notification on the Kasturirangan report. The draft notification has not recognized the suggestions of the state government. The state government has decided to file an objection in this regard.

The department of forests is effectively working towards the protection of wildlife and forests. The state is leading in the conservation of tigers and elephants. The remuneration of frontline employees will be increased as many of them have sacrificed their lives while performing their duty. The solar fencing project has been effectively utilized by the people.

The forest department, so as to tackle the deemed forest issue, is conducting a joint survey. The department has spotted Eco Sensitive Areas around national parks and wild life sanctuaries and a report on the same has been submitted to the central government.

Students and youth are effectively participating in the conservation of forests and wild animals. To promote the joy of conservation, the forest department is planning to hold nature camps where students and youth can come close to nature.

Hitting hard on the opposition, he said that lies and rumors are being spread on the creation of a tiger reserve, but when facts were presented, everyone is silent on the same. “I will never allow the creation of a tiger reserve in Kudremukh,” he added.

Vinay Kumar Sorake, Minister for Urban Development and Minister in-charge of the district, said that Udupi district is ecologically sensitive and the Western Ghats are our assets. The protection of our environment is important.

Beneficiaries of various schemes were provided with funds released by the forest department. The social organization and forest department staff were honoured for their contribution towards conservation of forests and wildlife.

Former MLA Gopal Bhandary also spoke on the occasion. Sanjay Bijoor, Chief Forest Conservator, Mangalore Circle delivered the keynote address.

Prior to the programme Minister Rai planted a sapling to mark the 61 Wildlife Week. Rehmath N Sheik, President TMC Karkala; Prakash Natalkar, DCF Kundapur; Hanumantappa DCF, Managalore Division; Vijay Kumari, President TP Karkala; Dr P Venkatramana Gowda, Principal Bhuvanendra College Karkala; Dr Ramesh P DCF Kudremukh Wildlife Division and others were present.
