Manipal: A 69-year-old woman from Davangare was successfully operated upon for an ovarian tumor that weighed 16 kilograms, size 35 cm x 40 cm, at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal here recently. Doctors at the hospital said that it was the largest-ever tumor found in a patient in this coastal Karnataka. The patient is recovering well and will be able to get back to her work routine soon.
The woman had the tumor for a year. Thirty years ago she had undergone hysterectomy to remove her uterus but the ovaries were retained. Three months ago she had complaints of loss of appetite and also a feeling of full and bloated even with a little intake. That is when she was referred to Dr Shripad Hebbar, Professor and Head of a unit of OBG department, Kasturba Medical College and Hospital Manipal.
The ultrasound examination done on January 23, 2017, showed a huge ovarian mass and Dr Hebbar advised immediate surgery. Dr Hebbar assisted by Dr Sujatha and Dr Sunanda and the anaesthesia team led by Dr Nita Varghese carried out a five-hour surgery to remove the tumor.
Dr (Col) M Dayananda Medical Superintendent and COO Kasturba Hospital, Manipal congratulated Dr Shripad Hebbar and his team for successfully performing the complicated surgical procedure. “Availing timely medical assistance and caution is the only way to avoid tumor growing to such large proportion,” Dr Dayananda added.
Great work by Dr Hebbar and his well coordinated team May God bless such doctors
