Kaup Block Congress holds protest against Union government’s Anti-Farmer Policies

Udupi: The Kaup Block Congress activists, led by MLA Vinay Kumar Sorake, on Monday July 10 staged a protest in Kaup and Hiriyadka demanding the Union government to waive the farm loans availed in nationalised banks and also against the Union government’s anti-farmer policies.

Addressing the protesters in Hiriyadka Vinay Kumar Sorake said that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has given a farmer friendly governance since the last four years. About 22.27 lakh farmers who had availed up to Rs 50,000 loan from co-operative banks have benefited from the government’s gesture.

Yeddyurappa had threatened Siddaramaiah that he will demand a loan waiver by grabbing his collar. Now, will he demand the loan waiver from the Centre grabbing Modi by his collar? Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has waived of short-term crop loans to the tune of Rs 8,167 crore availed by farmers from co-operative banks in the state.

However, at present B S Yeddyurappa has remained silent on his assurance that the Centre would waive the farmers loan in nationalised banks once the state government waives the farm loan issued by cooperative banks in the state. The State government had already taken a decision to waive the farm loans taken from cooperative societies.

Sorake accused the state BJP leaders of being hypocrites and said they do not have the courage to speak in front of the prime minister. None of the BJP MPs from Karnataka have demanded the loan waiver in the Parliament, he said.

“We have waived the co-operative farm loans. The Centre should now come to the rescue of the farmers who have obtained loans from nationalised banks and rural banks. We demand that the Centre waive short-term loans worth Rs 42,000 crore availed by farmers from nationalised banks and rural banks. Otherwise, the BJP will not have the moral right to speak a word about the farmers”, he added.

In the protest at Kaup, Ivan D’Souza chief whip of the Legislative council said that many districts in the state are facing severe drought and BJP leader B S Yeddyurappa is inspecting the drought problem standing on the roads. By having food in five star hotels, the BJP leaders are showing fake love towards Dalits by visiting their colonies. Today Acche Din has come only for Narendra Modi, Amith Shah, Adani, Ambani and Shobakka and not for the common man in the state.
The Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje is playing dirty politics with the murder of the innocent. She does not want the people of the coastal districts to live peacefully. The BJP wants to take advantage of the situation by creating communal clashes, but the government will not allow that to happen. The government is trying to restore peace in Kalladka, he added.

Former Karkala MLA Gopal Bhandary criticised the Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu for his statement that demanding loan waiver has become a fashion and said that it shows the BJP’s concern for the farmers. The Siddaramaiah led congress government has fulfilled most of the promises made in the election manifesto. The government is all set to fulfill the remaining assurances within the next two years and would come before the people, seeking a fresh mandate in the 2018 elections. Out of 165 assurances in the manifesto, the government has been able to fulfill 100 by now. The BJP is dreaming of coming to power in the state. The Congress workers should not allow this to happen, he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has failed to keep the promises made during the Lok Sabha elections. Narendra Modi had assured before the Lok Sabha polls that he will bring ‘Acche Din’ in the country. It is unfortunate that even after completing three year as Prime Minister, Modi has failed to fulfill the pre-poll promises. The BJP has fooled the people to get votes. While the Congress has always worked for uniting the society, the BJP’s aim has been to divide the society on religious lines. The Modi government had taken a U-turn on Aadhar, black money, Goods and Services Act. The tall promises of “Achhe din” has turned in to a nightmare for people of the country, he said.

Former MLA U R Sabhapathi, Karnataka state minority development authority president M A Gafoor, Youth Congress leader Amrith Shenoy and others also spoke on the occasion.

Congress Leaders Naveenchandra Shetty, Dr Deviprasad Shetty, Vishwas Ameen, Ashok Kumar Kodavoor, Udyavar Nagesh Kumar, Harish Kini, Chandrika Kelkar and others were also present.
