KCSC Holds Onam Celebrations in Udupi
Udupi: “Our government is always committed to protecting Keralites living in Karnataka”, said Kota Srinivas Poojary minister for fisheries, port, inland service and Muzrai.
He was speaking after inaugurating the Onam celebrations oragnised by Kerala Cultural and Social Center Udupi at the Narayana Guru Hall Bannanje here on Sunday, September 15.
Onam is celebrated to honour King Mahabali, who according to the legend ruled the state once, under whom all the people were equal, prosperous and happy. People believe that it was on this particular day of Thiruvonam in the Malayalam calendar month of Chingam when Lord Mahavishnu took his fifth avatar as Vamana, appeared in the kingdom of King Mahabali and sent him to the netherworld. According to legend, on Thiruvonam day the spirit of King Mahabali visits the people of Kerala.
Addressing the gathering Kota Srinivas Poojary said, “If we go to any part of the world, we may find a person from Kerala. Malayalees always promote native tradition and culture worldwide. Our culture is our real strength. Our culture plays an important role in developing our country”.
Tulu actor Aravind Bolar said, “Onam is the only festival, which is being celebrated by people of all caste and religions. We need to respect and honour all cultures and traditions practiced by all castes and religions. Keralites are hardworking, who try to unite everyone. Today Keralites are living across the world because of their hard work. Keralites adapt to the culture of the people of the place they live and that is why they are successful, wherever they settle”.
Onam traditions such as Pookalam and Thiruvathira were part of the entertainment programme along with other dances performed by the Malayalee students.
