KMC/APD Foundation observed 72nd I-Day with ‘1947 Seconds For Freedom’ Act

Kasturba Medical College-Mangaluru and Anti-Pollution Drive {APD} Foundation observed 72nd I-Day with ‘1947 Seconds For Freedom’ Act, a Celebration of Freedom for a Clean and Responsible India.

Mangaluru: Kasturba Medical College-Mangaluru and Anti Pollution Drive {APD} Foundation observed 72nd Independence Day with ‘1947 Seconds For Freedom’ to celebrate “Freedom for Environment’, in an attempt to raise awareness on the importance of pollution-Free and healthy and hygiene City. The performance was based on the concept of ‘Improv Theatre’ where the acts were performed live on the spot, and it was based on the situation without prior rehearsals or practice. These acts were held on 14 and 15 August at various locations, namely KSRTC Bus Stand, Mangalore Central Railway Station, and on I-Day the act enthralled a bunch of shoppers at the Bharath Mall, Mangaluru. As part of the theme, the shows lasted for 32 minutes and 27 seconds, translating to 1947 seconds.

Raising their voices to the highest level saying, “Banni Banni Nodi Nodi { Come, Come, See, See…}”, a ‘Nukkad Naatak’ based on the effects of pollution was performed by the students of Volunteer Services Organization of KMC, Mangaluru. This folk play highlighted issues faced in every common man’s life, caused by ignorance towards nature. The ‘Naatak’ apart from raising awareness on green and clean environment, also highlighted and brought awareness on Road Safety on the distracted effect of using a mobile phone when driving, riding triple or not wearing helmet or what to do when experiencing symptoms of fatigue, and many other Road Safety issues.

Added attraction to the event, was the band ‘Drum Maaro Drum’ comprising of Sakenth, a student of NITK on the musical instrument ‘Cajon’; Swafwan on Vocals and Zapokhoto on Guitar, both PG students of St Aloysius College-Mangaluru, who performed songs that were written for the local audience to educate them on waste segregation and environmental preservation. Through the songs, the band also paid tribute to Mangaluru City Corporation and Antony Waste Management for its active involvement in keeping Mangaluru clean. Songs like ‘Kachra’ {Waste}, where the lyrics highlighted to segregate waste served the need of the hour, advising people to segregate their waste from wet and dry before dumping it into the dustbin or leave it out for the waste collectors to pick it up.

Yet another added attraction of the event was a contemporary play ‘Panchabhootha’ performed by the volunteers of The APD foundation, where the concept of the play revolved around the unison of the five elements of nature against mankind who is headed towards its own destruction through pollution. Speaking to Team Mangalorean, Founder of APD Foundation Abdullah Rehman said, ” Through this event we wanted to bring about awareness in a fun and frolic way, unique and non-advocative way, which for a long time citizens of Mangaluru have been trying to fight environmental issues with advocacy and seriousness. This is our effort to make environmental responsibility a fun and enjoyable activity. Together we can make a difference in our community in keeping our city clean and green”.

Also speaking active co-ordinators of APD Foundation Karl D’Cunha and Carol Reema Pinto said, “This independence day, as we celebrate our victory for freedom, let’s not forget to appreciate the earth, the sky, the water and the air that our makes up our homeland. Because she is, we are. It is our responsibility to protect and nurture the homeland our forefathers gifted us. We need to work together for a better, cleaner and safer environment. We can do it, if we all pledge to do it. So let’s do it without wasting any more time, and look forward for a cleaner and greener Mangaluru City”.

The event also saw a bunch of spot games, including fun games for the children, who won APD Foundation T-Shirts as their “Precious and Expensive” Prizes? The show was compered by RJ Sudeep and Sushma Shetty. At the show held at KSRTC Bus Stand, Ms. Priya Suvarna, representing KSRTC Mangalore division, was felicitated by the organization for her support in making the event a possibility. Antony Waste Handling Cell Pvt Ltd. and Bharath Mall, were among many others who associated with the organizers in putting up this event. The tw day program ended with a great response and an enlightened crowd, and did bring lots of awareness on Environment and also on Road Safety.

Yes, Pollution is Real, our silence is not going to solve the problem, but our actions are. So let’s join hands together to eradicate this menace and free our country, yet again!
