KMC Holds Walkathon to Mark World Stroke Day
Mangaluru: To mark the World Stroke Day, the KMC Hospital Mangalore organized a Walkathon from KMC Hospital Tower 2, Dr Ambedkar Circle Jyothi to KMC Light House Hill Road here on October 25.
Senior Professor Department of Neurology Dr I G Bhat flagged off the Walkathon at the KMC Hospital Tower 2.
Addressing the gathering Dr I G Bhat said, “Today KMC has organized the Walkathon for the first time on the World Stroke Day. It is a good initiative from KMC to bring awareness among the people about the Stroke. I congratulate KMC as well as the participants for coming forward to create awareness among the general public through Walkathon about the stroke.”
Medical Superintendent, KMC Hospital Mangaluru Dr Anand Venugopal, speaking on the occasion said, “It is an initiative taken up by KMC to create awareness on Stroke. The World stroke day is observed on October 29. This is one of the series of programmes flagged off today and will continue for a week. This is not just a one-man job, we should all join hands to create awareness about early signs of stroke. We have to bring awareness to the people about the early signs of stroke as well as prevention so that we can provide appropriate treatment in a multi-specialty place which has all the components or treating these kinds of conditions. Basically, this is an awareness on prevention, early recognition of the signs by visiting an appropriate center for treatment. Treating such patients is a team effort and we have a complete stroke unit to treat such patients.”
Addressing the gathering Dean of KMC Dr M V Prabhu said, “Today 6 departments have joined hands to observe the World Stroke Day and have held the Walkathon from KMC Jyothi Circle to KMC Light House Hill Road. It is a good initiative to create awareness among the people. It is an academic social responsibility, we have the responsibility to create awareness of what is a stroke and how to treat it. A person who suffers from a stroke has 3 hours for treatment. Strokes occur due to the problems with blood supply to the brain: either the blood supply is blocked, or a blood vessel within the brain ruptures, causing brain tissue to die. A stroke is a medical emergency, and treatment must be sought as quickly as possible. We should start with community medicine because this is a community awareness activity. The community medicine department has taken the initiative to organize this Walkathon. I thank all the participants from KMC for creating awareness among the people through the Walkathon”.
HOD Consultant neurology dr Z K Misra, Consultant Neurology Dr Shivanand Pai, Consultant Neurology Dr Rohit Pai, Senior Medical officer Dr Diwakar Shetty, Consultant IM Dr J Radhakrishan, Dr Rekha and HOD Community Medicine Dr Animash Jain were also present.
