KMC Hospital Attavar Holds workshop on ‘Mental Health in Workplace’
Mangaluru: The KMC Hospital Attavar organised a workshop on Mental Health in the workplace at the Sanjeevini Hall, KMC premises here on October 11.
The programme began with an invocation. Prof and head Psychiatry KMC hospital Dr Keshav Pai welcomed the gathering. The programme was inaugurated by the Associate Dean of KMC Dr B Unnikrishnan by lighting the traditional lamp along with other dignitaries on the dais.
Addressing the gathering Dr Unnikrishnan said, “Today we observe the World Mental health day with the theme “Mental health in the workplace”. Actually, those who do not have a job suffer from mental illness. Once a person gets a job, the case of mental illness is less but will depend on the kind of job the person joins. The common mental disorders that affect employees are, depression and anxiety related problems. 300 million people all over the world suffer from mental disorder. Many times depression and anxiety affect a person. Because of mental issues at work, productivity is lost. We spend more time at our workplace and less time at home. If the workplace environment is not conducive you will carry the stress and whatever effect you have at your workplace will affect your family life.”
Dr Unnikrishnan further said, “At the workplace, the employee has targets to be achieved, if the employee is unable to achieve his/her target he/she will be fired. Such mental problems will create an unhealthy environment in one’s family life. At the workplace, there are a number of factors that affect the mental health. If the relationship between the employee and the employer is good there will be good productivity. I personally see that employees do not have a specific job description, lack of interpersonal communication, lack of communication between employer and the employee. The employer should encourage a good working environment for the employees and identify those people who are in need of counseling. In any industry, employees are given a target to achieve. Mental health is related to physical health, both physical and mental health are interconnected. If you are not mentally strong then you are not physically strong.”
Senior Resident and organizing secretary Dr Smitha L Rasquinha delivered the vote of thanks. Associate Professor Department of Psychiatry KS Hegde Medical Academy Delarakatte Dr Srinivasa Bhat Undaru delivered a talk on “Mental Health in the workplace”.
Medical Superintendent KMC Hospital Dr Anand Venugopal and others were also present.
