KMC Hospital Mangaluru enters Third Space
Mangaluru: KMC Hospital Mangaluru has recently embarked on to third space endoscopy with successful completion of POEM(Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy).The procedure was done by the Department of Medical Gastroenterology under the guidance of Dr Vikas Singla, who has an experience of doing more than 100 procedures.
Two Young patients presented to Dr B. V. Tantry and Dr Anurag J Shetty with difficulty in swallowing and regurgitation of long duration. On evaluation with endoscopy and manometry (to measure muscle pressure and movements in the oesophagus), they were diagnosed to have Achalasia Cardia; a rare condition that occurs when patients food pipe doesn’t open properly making it difficult to swallow. Patients were offered the option of POEM which they opted for and underwent successfully at the Department of Medical Gastroenterology, KMC Hospital Mangaluru
POEM is a minimally invasive procedure for treatment of achalasia cardia. It is a new and safe procedure pioneered in Japan and being performed only in few centers of excellence in India. This is the first time the procedure is being done in coastal Karnataka
POEM is an endoscopic surgical procedure done through the mouth by means of a small incision on the food pipe and tunnelling technique. It has many advantages and is a relatively safe procedure with no scar marks, no blood loss and patient is able to resume daily activities within a short time compared to the traditional surgical treatment which involved longer days of Hospitalization with scar marks on the body.
Speaking on the Occasion, Medical Superintendent of KMC Hospitals Mangaluru- Dr Anand Venugopal said that the dept. of Gastroenterology is one of the first super specialities in KMC Hospital Mangaluru. The Dept. is equipped with State-of-the-art endoscopic equipment including endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) supported by highly skilled & experienced staff.
