KMC Hospital Observes World Alzheimer’s Day

Mangaluru: To mark the World Alzheimer’s day, the Department of Psychiatry along with the Centre for Care of Older Persons, Department of General Medicine, KMC Hospital, Mangaluru conducted a workshop on “Caregiving for Persons with Dementia” with special focus on Understanding and Responding to Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia at the Sanjeevini hall here on September 25.


The workshop is aimed at caregivers of old age homes and students of MSW as they are the primary caregivers of people with dementia. The programme began with an invocation. The workshop was inaugurated by Dr Keshava Pai along with other dignitaries on the dais.

Dr Keshav Pai highlighted the Psychiatric aspects and the clinical features of dementia, psychiatric comorbidities and psychiatric management of the disease.

Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine Dr Sheetal Raj spoke about the purpose of the workshop and how it is helpful for professional caregivers, he delivered a lecture on the medical causes and management of dementia. Sujith Babu, Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology, Department of Psychiatry, KMC Mangalore, spoke on the Assessment and Cognitive Rehabilitation for People with Dementia.

The participants were divided into groups and cases were given for discussion. Mariella D’Souza spoke about the Burnout in Caregivers of People with Dementia.

As part of the programme, a poster competition was held for nurses in the morning, which had a very good response. Dr Rohit Pai, Assistant Professor of Neurology, KMC, Hospital and Sujith Babu, Assistant professor in Clinical Psychology, Dept of Psychiatry, KMC, Hospital Attavar judged the Poster competition and 3 best posters were given Prizes.

Mariella D’Souza, Selection Grade Lecturer in Psychiatric Social Work Department of Psychiatry, delivered the vote of thanks. Intern Dr Nidhi Shreshtha compered the programme.
