KMC Hospitals Mangaluru Perform High-Quality Robotic Assisted Oncology Surgery

New lease of life given to 52 year and 50-year-old patients suffering from uterine cancer

Mangaluru: KMC Hospitals Mangaluru performed a challenging robotic-assisted oncology surgery to give a fresh lease of life to two patients suffering from uterine cancer stage 1. Surgeries were performed by the team of surgical oncologists Prof Dr Somashekhar, S P HOD Surgical Oncology, Manipal Hospital Bangalore and Dr Harish E Surgical Oncologist KMC Hospital Mangalore

Endometrial cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the uterus. Endometrial cancer begins in the layer of cells that form the lining (endometrium) of the uterus. A surgical procedure to remove the uterus is recommended for most women with endometrial cancer. Most women with endometrial cancer undergo hysterectomy, where the fallopian tubes and ovaries are also removed. (salpingo-oophorectomy).

The 52-year-old woman was suffering from with Carcinoma endometrium (Uterine cancer) stage 1A. Robotic hysterectomy with bilateral pelvic node dissection was performed. The surgery went on for 2.5 hours and the patient could consume normal food within 3 – 4 hours as compared to the traditional surgeries where the patient can have normal food only after 2 -3 days. The procedure went smooth and the recovery was faster with no ICU admissions and heavy medications. The patients were discharged the following day and can even resume work in 3 days. Similarly, a 50-year-old lady with stage 1b Carcinoma endometrium (Uterine cancer) was operated. In stage IB, cancer has spread halfway or more into the myometrium.

Speaking on the occasion Prof Dr Somashekhar S P HOD Surgical Oncology, Manipal Hospital Bangalore said, “ Robot-assisted surgery dramatically improves outcomes in patients with uterine, endometrial, and cervical cancer. Moreover, because of fewer post-operative complications and shorter hospital stays, robotic procedures also cost less. Robotic-assisted oncology surgeries is a boon to both patients and doctors. It has multiple advantages over a traditional surgery. It is precise, minimally invasive, painless, blood loss is minimal and recovery is faster.”

Dr Harish E, Surgical Oncologist, KMC Hospitals, Mangaluru said, “This is a revolutionary and novel technique with great impact. Both the surgeries were performed successfully using robotic assistance with great results. Today the patients have recovered well and will be resuming their routine work. The word ‘Robotic surgery’ is a misnomer, here the surgeon is performing surgery with the help of a robot so essentially it should be called as ‘robot-assisted surgery’.The pelvic surgeries are generally difficult areas to access due to space constraints, but Robot-assisted surgery has made this so easy that patients will have a dramatic recovery with less complications. This type of surgery eliminates the need for traditional invasive surgeries to a large extent.”

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Anand Venugopal, Medical Superintendent, KMC Hospitals Mangalore said, “We are pleased to at the outcome of these two critical surgeries that were performed at KMC Mangaluru. The surgeries were challenging and it required great technique, tremendous amount of efforts and expertise. At KMC Hospitals Mangaluru we have Robotic surgery programme in Onco Surgery, Urology, Gynecology, Gastrointestinal Surgeries are being offered to the patients. I congratulate the oncology department of our Hospitals, which reflects on our commitment to offer world-class healthcare solutions to deal with critical situations.”
