Forever Young Thru Yoga! KMC Nava Chaitnaya-Bejai celebrated 15th Anniversary on Saturday, 28 July 2018, and to mark the occasion donated two wheel chairs to 34-year-old Chethan Kumar from Sakleshpur, who is getting treated at KMC-Jyothi, Mangaluru for Spinal Tuberculosis; and 7-year-old Prapti Devadiga of Bikkarnakatta, Mangaluru who was born with disabilities and still can’t walk

Mangaluru: “None are so old as those who have outlived enthusiasm. Live your life and forget your age ” had said Henry David Thoreau. Staying healthy and feeling your best is important at any age and that doesn’t change just because you have a few more grey hairs. Coping with change is difficult, no matter how old you are. The particular challenge for adults over 50 plus is the sheer number of changes and transitions that start to occur—including children moving away, the loss of parents, friends, and other loved ones, changes to or the end of their career, declining health, and even loss of independence. It’s natural to feel those losses. But if that sense of loss is balanced with positive ingredients, there are quite a few a formula’s for staying healthy as you age – and one formula is regular exercises that will keep you healthy to stay “Young Forever”!

KMC Nava Chaitanya- Bejai comprise of people of all ages, but mostly middle-aged and seniors- and they keep themselves active through various activities, exercises, among which Yoga is one- because they know the benefits of yoga which includes increased flexibility, muscle tone, vitality, energy, cardiovascular and circulatory health, weight loss and athletic prowess. Yoga can also help control pain associated with arthritis, headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome and more. And they have been practicing yoga and other exercises for many years. On Saturday, 28 July, KMC Nava Chaitanya celebrated their 15th anniversary at KMC-Bejai amidst members, friends and well-wishers.

The programme began with invoking God’s blessings, followed by welcome address by Ms Deviprada Hegde, the president of Nava Chaitanya. The celebration was inaugurated by lighting the traditional lamp by the chief guest- Dr Poornima A Manjrekar-Professor and HOD of Biochemistry, KMC Bejai, Mangaluru, along with guests of honor-Dr Rekha D Kini-Associate Professor, Physiology Dept, KMC Bejai, Mangaluru. and Shyam Krishnan K-Associate Professor Senior Scale, Dept of Physiotherapy, KMC, Mangaluru. Er Geradin D’souza- Founder of Mangalore Alzheimer’s Association also graced the occasion. Following the inauguration, two wheel chairs were donated to 34-year-old Chethan Kumar from Sakleshpur, who is getting treated at KMC-Jyothi, Mangaluru for Spinal Tuberculosis; and 7-year-old Prapti Devadiga of Bikkarnakatta, Mangaluru who was born with disabilities and still can’t walk

Chethan Kumar, being an automobile engineer was employed with reputed company, but when bad luck stuck him three years ago, when he was affected with Spinal Tuberculosis, left him bedridden since then, and has been admitted and getting treatment at KMC Mangaluru since 2017, under Neuro-surgeon Dr Muralidhar Pai, an expert in the field of Neuro Sciences. His mother is always besides him at the hospital, taking care of her beloved son. Indeed a very sad story and Chethan has made a kind request to the readers of Mangalorean.com if they could help him towards expenses of purchasing a KFO {Knee Foot Orthotic} Belt, which is badly needed by Him. You can call Chethan at 9482622108 or Ms Deviprada Hegde at 9900958654.

Addressing the audience chief guest Dr Poornima said, ” Yoga will help relax a person’s body and mind. Yoga is ideal for people who cannot perform rigorous exercise due to certain health conditions. Regular yoga stretches can help lower cholesterol and high blood pressure. Some medical professionals advise those who have heart problems or a history of stroke to take part in yoga. And I am glad to note that the members of KMC Nava Chaitanya are doing a great job in keeping themselves fit through exercises and yoga- and also involving in community services. You have all done great achievement in 15 years, since KMC Navachaitanya’s inception by Dr Prabha Adhikari. Looking at all of you 75 members engaging in Yoga, I feel ashamed that I am not practicing it. The kind gesture in presenting two wheel-chairs to deserving two persons needs to be commended”.

Dr Rekha D Kini said, “Every time I walk by the KMC hall in Bejai, and when I see the smiling faces of all you yoga enthusiasts, I feel like joining your organization but my busy schedule doesn’t let me. But I will surely join you all when opportunity strikes. Aside from the physical benefits, one of the best benefits of yoga is how it helps a person manage stress, which is known to have devastating effects on the body and mind. Stress can reveal itself in many ways, including back or neck pain, sleeping problems, headaches, drug abuse, and an inability to concentrate. Yoga can be very effective in developing coping skills and reaching a more positive outlook on life. Regular yoga practice creates mental clarity and calmness; increases body awareness; relieves chronic stress patterns; relaxes the mind; centers attention; and sharpens concentration. Body- and self-awareness are particularly beneficial, because they can help with early detection of physical problems and allow for early preventive action. So you should be happy to remain healthy and fit by doing yoga exercises. Wish you all good health”

Shyam Krishnan speaking about physiotherapy said, “One of the basic things that physiotherapy can do, is to help with healing, but in a holistic way. Holistic healing is an approach to healing illness, injury, or a way to improve health by considering physical, psychological and social impacts on your health. Physiotherapist do not prescribe medication but work with your body and mind to promote healing and health. Many people tend to enjoy this perk and seek out the healing approaches of physiotherapy as a result. Physiotherapy has worked wonders in many patients, and here among us is Prakash Hebbar, who is recovering slowly after one of his leg was amputated, due to an accident. One common way physiotherapy can improve your lifestyle is by avoiding surgery. It may take a while for Chetan Kumar to recover, but with proper treatment and care at KMC, one day he will be a happy person again”.

Prakash Hebbar thanked KMC Navachaitanya Bejai for giving him a new life through their financial contribution in 2016 towards his treatment, and speaking to Team Mangalorean he said, ” In December 2015, he met with a tragic accident, when a truck hit his bike, which left one of his leg badly damaged, and later it had to be amputated.

Prizes were distributed to the winners in various contests held as part of Anniversary Celebrations. The vote of thanks was proposed by Ms Devipradha Hegde and the event was compered by Ms Poornima Bhasker Amin. The formal programme was followed by a cultural session, where the “young” members of KMC Nava Chaitanya enthralled the audience with their hidden talents, comprising of songs, skit and dances. No doubt, they all rocked! While complimenting all these ladies for remaining energetic and happy through Yoga, I end this report with a humour

“A young woman who was worried about her habit of biting her fingernails down to the quick was advised by a friend to take up yoga. She did, and soon her fingernails were growing normally. Her friend asked her if yoga had totally cured her nervousness. “No,” she replied, “but now I can reach my toe-nails so I bite them instead.”

Chethan Kumar has made a kind request to the readers of Mangalorean.com if they could help him towards expenses of purchasing a KFO {Knee Foot Orthotic} Belt, which is badly needed by Him. You can call Chethan Kumar at 9482622108 or Ms Deviprada Hegde at 9900958654.
