KOMSCON 2017- 7th Annual Karnataka State Conference of AOMSI (Association Of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons Of India ) Launched at A J Institute of Medical Sciences (AJIMS)

Taking the discussions in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery to a higher level of evolution, the conference theme has been chosen as “Controversies in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery”.
Mangaluru: KOMSCON 2017-The 7th Annual Karnataka State Conference of AOMSI was inaugurated in a grand way at the state of art Auditorium, A J Institute of Medical Sciences, Mangalore. It’s being held for the first time in Mangaluru, a record number of participants from all over Karnataka and also from the neighbouring states turned up for this event. This mega event was conducted under the able leadership of Dr. B H Sripathi Rao, Org Chairman, Principal, Yenepoya Dental College and Dr. Manjunath Rai, Org. Secretary, Prof & Head, Dept of OMFS, A J Institute of Dental Sciences along with their entire team of organizing committee.
The conference was inaugurated by lighting the lamp by Dr. A J Shetty, President of Laxmi Memorial Education Trust, who was the chief guest for the inaugural function, along with other dignitaries on the dais namely-Dr. S Ramananda Shetty , Vice Chancellor of Nitte University; Prashanth Shetty, Vice – President of Laxmi Memorial Education Trust; Dr. Y Bharath Shetty , Dean of A J Institute of Dental Sciences; Dr. KGopalkrishnan, President of Karnataka State Chapter; Dr. R S Neelakandan, President of AOMSI Head Office and Dr. Preetham N. Shetty , Hon Gen. Secretary of AOMSI Head Office. The theme of the Conference is “Controversies in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery” and various eminent Guest Speakers who have come from all over the country would be enlightening the delegates with their enriched knowledge for two days.
This landmark event is held by Karnataka state Chapter of AOMSI under the leadership of Dr. B H Sripathi Rao, Organizing Chairman and Dr. Manjunath Rai, Organizing Secretary. This platform is designed with full coverage of the wide spectrum of controversies in our speciality through interactive sessions, panel discussions and debates. Around 280 post graduates and 120 delegates from various parts of Karnataka and neighbouring states have registered for the Conference and will actively participate to gain and share knowledge through this Conference. Delegates will also actively take part in the paper presentation, poster presentation. The scientific educational forum has brought d knowledge in front of the maxillofacial community regarding the latest innovations and improvements through educational lectures.
The conference inaugural ceremony began with invoking God’s blessings through a prayer song, followed by welcome address by Dr. B H Sripathi Rao, Organising Chairman, where he said, ” We have chosen the theme for the conference as ‘Controversies in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery’. Controversies are part and parcel of any field of science and Maxillofacial Surgery is no exception. As science grows, today’s controversies no longer remain so in the coming days, yet new controversies would keep cropping up. We believe, it is important for us to know, discuss these controversies and try to derive a conclusion that would eventually lead to more effective patient care. The scientific program will include lectures, panel discussions, video presentations, and delegate, trainee free paper/poster presentations. We have dedicated an entire day exclusively to trainee free paper/poster presentations so that they will not miss the important key note lectures and deliberations. Come – Share – Learn.”
Addressing the gathering, Dr Ramananda gave a brief history of AOMSI, saying, “The Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery was started in 1969 under the banner of Association of Oral Surgeons of India (AOSI). The AOSI was officially affiliated to the International Association during the Sydney conference in 1977. The AOSI was renamed as Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (AOMSI) in 1985. The AOMSI is a registered organization and admits qualified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons as Life or Annual members. The Association is committed to the promotion of the specialty through its scientific deliberations and social causes.”
“The Association has two major conventions every year. In addition, the AOMSI officially participates in Continuing Education programmes held by its members in different parts of the country. The Executive Committee meets three or four times every year and is the official decision-making body. In 2010 AOMSI has started forming new state chapters by the EC members which are affiliated to AOMSI and constitutionally recognized by the Charter. AOMSI has recently promoted an Independent Board i.e. Indian Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (IBOMS) to promote excellence in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery by conducting examinations and awarding Board Certification i.e. Fellowship Degree in Indian Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. The Secretariat of the Association is at the place of residence of the Hon. General Secretary of the AOMSI and is presently situated in Mangaluru.” added Dr Shetty.Dr AJ Shetty also spoke and complimented the organizers of the conference for their hard work and efforts in hosting the event, and said that he was proud that his institution got the chance to host the conference first time in Mangaluru.

Dr RS Neelakandan also spoke and briefed about the projects and work done by AOMSI. The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr Manjunath Rai, Org. Secretary; and the programme was compered by Dr Shalini and Dr Shabari-Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons at AB Shetty Dental College, and AJ Dental College respectively.
In conclusion, the face could be considered as a special organ and probably is the most complex one of the human body. Not only does it contain the “five senses” that we interact with our surroundings, it is also essential for social interactions. Individual faces are unique and represent one’s identity. However, when there is trauma to the head and maxillofacial region, our face is dispensable anatomically. Our facial skeletons could collapse and be displaced relatively easily. This cushion effect helps to decrease the impact to our cranial vault, which harbours one other important organ of our body, our brain. However, the trauma to the facial skeletons could have severe impacts on the patient’s “five senses” and the well-being as an individual. In this issue, we shall discuss a few topics that are commonly seen in patients with maxillofacial trauma. As the dentition is closely related to the facial skeleton, it is not uncommon to see associated malocclusion in those patients with facial trauma. Restoration of the traumatised dentition is always a challenge to clinicians. When we are treating patients with maxillofacial trauma, rehabilitation of functions and restoration of anatomy are equally imperative in the treatment planning.
