Kudla to have Mayor in November! HC orders to hold MCC Elections by 15 November

Mangaluru : Will Mangaluru have a Mayor from the Congress party or the BJP, it will be all known in the month of November 2019. The High Court on Tuesday, 27 August has directed the State Election Commission (SEC) to hold and complete the election process of Mangaluru City Corporation by 15 November. A division bench headed by Chief Justice Abhay Shreenivas Oka gave this direction while disposing of a PIL on the issue. Abdul Gafoor and Mohammed Haneef had filed the PIL in HC seeking directions to conduct the polls.


The Court directed the government to extend all cooperation in this matter. Counsel for SEC submitted that in the view of interim orders passed by the Court vis-a-vis petitions challenging fixing of reservation being in force till 31 May 2019, the election could not be conducted even though the term of the corporation had expired om 12 March 2019. Also the MCC elections were postponed due to the govt elections.

In the after math of success in the Assembly elections, the BJP in Dakshina Kannada will now focusing on wresting Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) Council, which will go to the polls in November.
