Udupi: District police crack Akshatha murder case, two arrested
Udupi (Update 12.30 pm): The suspicion surrounding Akshatha Devadiga’s death in Byndoor has come to an end. The police department has arrested 2 persons accused of murdering Akshatha and also attempting to sexually assault her.
Amrit Paul, Inspector General of Police, Western Range held a press meet at the SP office here on June 20. Amrit Paul said that the accused Sunil (19) alias Keppa and Akshay (19), both residents of Yadtare Byndoor, were arrested on charges of murdering Akshatha.
Primary investigations reveal that when Akshatha was on her way home, the prime accused Sunil along with Akshay followed her. The duo killed her by strangling her with her veil and attempted to sexually assault her.
A special investigation team was formed by SP Annamalai K, after investigating the facts and findings, the police arrested the duo late night on June 19. Sunil is pursuing his ITI studies in Byndoor and Akshay has completed his PUC and was planning to apply for ITI. Sunil and Akshay are cousins. The investigations in the case will continue.
Amrith Paul denied the rumor surrounding Ratna Kotari’s death case, which is still under investigation, that it was linked to the accused involved in murdering Akshatha. He said, “The case is still under investigation, we have not closed the case but the investigation will continue.” He also revealed that the report from the Forensic Science Laboratory on Ratna Kottari’s case and primary investigations do not indicate rape or sexual assault,” he added.
He also said that the police department in Udupi will hold school beat in the district. The remote areas will be highly preferred for beats. The Naxal activities are under control in the district but whenever there are complains about their movements, the ANF officials respond, they also regularly hold beats.
Home Minister K J George and Omprakash (Director General of Police and Inspector General of Police), along with the Additional Director General of Police have congratulated the Udupi Police Department for the speedy investigation into the case. The Director General of Police has announced Rs 3 lakh as reward for the investigation team.
K Annamalai, District Superintendent of Police; Manjunath Shetty, DySP Kundapur; Sudarshan M, Byndoor CPI; Jay Shanker, Inspector District Crime Investigation Bureau; Santosh Kaikini, PSI Byndoor; Arun B Nayak, CPI Bramhavar and others were present.
Kundapur: A 19-year-old youth has been arrested in connection with the death of the 17-year-old College student at Henuberu, Otthenene, Byndoor here, on June 20.
The arrested has been identified as Sunil (19), a resident of Yojana Nagar, Byndoor.
Akshatha Devadiga (17), daughter of Babu Devadiga from Henuberu, was found dead at Henuberu, on June 17. Akshatha was studying in the Government Pre University College, Byndoor.
Students from various colleges protested and demanded the arrest of the culprit behind the death of Askhatha. IGP Amrit Paul, Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake and the SP Annamalai assured to take the issue seriously and arrest the culprit soon.
Sunil was arrested in Byndoor and he will be produced before the magistrate on June 20.

This report doesn’t give any details on clues that led to these arrests. Were there any forensic evidence behind these arrests ? Or, was it the culprits who came forward to admit the crime? We need to ask these questions as our police are notoriously known for ‘fixing’ the cases to avoid any public backlash.

If Raghupati, or Renuka.. or Ravi or Reddy or Yeddy or Sushma or Vasundhara or Hinduja or Modi etc are involved, all these questions would be raised.
But, if a Mammade or Soja are involved, police can arrest and punish for no fault of theirs!
