Lawrencian State Level Volleyball Tournament Commences with Grand Inauguration at Moodubelle
Udupi: The much anticipated and eagerly awaited Lawrencian State Level Volleyball Tournament commenced on Saturday, 17 November 2018 at the St. Lawrence PU College Ground at 8:00 pm with a grand inauguration function in the presence of dignitaries and volleyball enthusiasts attending in large numbers.
The inauguration function started with a welcome dance performed by the students of St. Lawrence English Medium High School, Moodubelle. Thereafter, MC of the programme Sr Irene Viegas invited the guests to the dais. The guests included Fr Clement Mascarenhas, Parish Priest of Moodubelle who presided over the inaugural function, Fr Valerian Mendonca-Parish Priest of Mother of Sorrows Church, Udupi and Dean of Udupi Varado, Fr Denis D’Sa-Parish Priest of Our Lady of Health, Shirva and Dean of Shirva Varado; Chief Guests-Commodore Jerome Castelino, Fr Mahesh D’Souza, Joyline Lobo and Raison Rebello. Other dignitaries on the dais included Fr Lawrence Cutinha, Vincent Fernandes, Elias D’Souza, Latha D’Mello and donors- Mukund Kamath, Anil D’Mello, Ivan D’Almeida and Imelia Noronha.
Following the welcome address by Fr Lawrence Cutinha, the Convener of the Tournament Committees, the chief guest of the function, Commodore Jerome Castelino was introduced by Meera Lobo highlighting his achievements and service in the Indian Navy. Commodore Jerome Castelino inaugurated the Lawrencian State Level Volleyball Tournament 2018 by releasing a bunch of balloons and the plaque of the tourney.
In his message, Commodore Jerome Castelino complemented the organizing committee for its efforts in organizing such a prestigious tournament which would inspire not only the volleyball lovers but also other sports enthusiasts. He wished well to all the participating teams and success to the entire tournament.
Two other chief guests, Joyline Lobo-International Triple Jump Star and Raison Rebello-International Volleyball player were introduced by Hazel Martis.
Both Joyline Lobo and Raison Rebello were felicitated by Fr Clement Mascarenhas for their achievements in sports and games.
In her reply to the felicitation, Joyline Lobo thanked the organizers for felicitating her and Raison Rebello on the occasion of the tournament. She further said that it is a great honour to Moodubelle that a State Level Volleyball Tournament is being hosted which would encourage a lot of young men and women to take up sports, especially volleyball.
A number of sponsors had come forward to facilitate the organization of the state level volleyball tournament on such a grand scale. In acknowledgment of their contribution, all the sponsors were honoured by Fr Clement Mascarenhas by presenting them mementos.
In his presidential address, Fr Clement Mascarenhas appreciated the hard work put in by all the committee in charges and their members under the leadership of Convener Fr Lawrence Cutinha and Coordinator Elias D’Souza. He also thanked all the sponsors and donors. He made an appeal to all the spectators to enjoy the tournament and encourage the players.
In appreciation of the service rendered by the committee members, Fr Clement Mascarenhas honoured them by presenting mementos. Victor D’Souza read the names of the sponsors.
Raghavendra of Malabar Gold presented Fr Clement silver coins as part of the tournament. Both Raghavendra and Mustafa of Malabar Gold were later honoured by presenting them with mementos.
Elias D’Souza delivered the vote of thanks. The entire programme was compeered by Sr Irene Viegas and Satish Shetty Chitrapady.
The colourful volleyball court where all the tournament matches would be played throughout the night was inaugurated by another chief guest of the function, Fr Mahesh D’Souza, first by cutting the ribbon and later releasing the volleyball tied to the net. He was introduced by Meera Lobo.
Fr Anil D’Souza-Parish Priest of Perampalli, Fr Frederick D’Souza-Parish Priest of Manipal, Fr Vijay Jayson D’Souza-Assistant Parish Priest of Udupi and Fr Roman, Rector of Minor Seminary, Moodubelle were present for the inaugural programme.
All the ten volleyball teams have arrived and the tournament is in progress.
The valedictory function will be held in the morning on Sunday, 18 November 2018 after the end of the tournament and cash prizes and trophies will be awarded to the winners.
