Leadership Development Programme at Sahyadri – “Empowering the Youth towards Excellence”
Mangaluru: Department of Business Administration hosted one-day leadership Development Programme for UG students. 167 students from various colleges took active participation in the programme. The day began with a brief inaugural session in the presence of Dr. Umesh M Bhushi, Principal, Dr. Vishal Samartha Director, Department of Business Administration, Prof. Prajwala Rodrigues, Chief Coordinator and Prof. Chandrakanth, Co-Coordinator of the programme. Prof. Prajwala Rodrigues welcomed the gathering. Dr. Vishal Samartha highlighted the purpose of the day-long event and also gave a brief glimpse of the department.
Dr. Umesh M Bhushi gave away the presidential remark. He started his speech with the story of John F Kennedy and his journey of becoming a successful leader. He applauded the efforts of the department for being vibrant in contributing to the society through conducting innovative programmes and helping the students in developing leadership. He encouraged students to explore their hidden talents and become a great leader and a good citizen. The formal inaugural ceremony was concluded with the Vote of Thanks by Prof. Chandrakanth.
The programme was inaugurated by Prof. Vineetha Rai K, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru, NSS coordinator, Nodal Officer – Youth Red Cross, Mangaluru University. She encouraged the NSS students and other students to grasp the knowledge from today’s workshop and utilize it for their betterment and she also asked the students to explore the campus of Sahyadri. She further appreciated the warm and earnest welcome that she received in Sahyadri College. She congratulated the team for organizing a novel programme and in her speech encouraged students to take up leadership roles in their future endeavors.
Suhan Prasad, Founder, Mango Pickle Entertainment, a film production in Mangaluru graced the occasion as Guest of Honor. He was also the assistant director for the Kannada film Chelapili and was the director for Tulu movie named Rang. He is the producer of the successful running movie “Ondu Motteya Kathe”. Suhan Prasad spoke about team management and how to work in a team with different mindset people. He inspired the students to dream big and made them realize that the biggest duty and responsibility of a leader is to stand back and let others shine.
He was delighted to be part of the programme and eloquently praised the ideology behind the programme. He narrated his struggle days and highlighted the hardships he faced to achieve the fruits of success. He beckoned students to rise from their comfort level and chase their dreams.
The entire day was divided into several key sessions. The first session was handled by Prof. Mithun Ullal on “Leader is a Ladder”. He in session He said that leader is the one who takes his entire team together. A leader must lead from the front when in a critical situation and must give the entire credit to his team for the success attained. He also said that leader is the one who believes in “WE” rather than “I”. A leader should be a motivator, Powerful and confident in whatever he does. He is the one who puts the effort of all his team mates to achieve the desired goal. The speaker quoted examples of several personalities like Alexander the great, Swami Vivekananda, Bhagat Singh, Albert Einstein etc. The session was well appreciated and enjoyed by the students
The second session of the day was conducted by Prof. Sushma. V on “It is not about EQ not IQ, it’s all about – “I Can”. The session emphasized the importance of developing “Can Do” Attitude. Few of the key points which were stressed upon were “To question ourselves Why not? , To set Smart Goals, where S stands for Specific, M- Measurable, A- Achievable, R- Realistic , T- Time bound, Throw the Box Strategy- Not to think out of the box but to throw the box and to think creatively, Enhance Physical, Intellectual & Behavioral Personality, To do the SWOT analysis of our self, K+S+A – To develop Knowledge, Skill and Ability/ Attitude and To Develop Good Ethics and Values in our life. The entire session underlined the importance of Self Belief and can do attitude as a stepping stone for success. The participants were awestruck with the confidence and enthusiasm of the speaker.
Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Bhandary Foundation addressed the gathering. He said that anybody could become a leader if they diligently work towards it. He also said that one must be good citizens and good children to one’s parents. One of the most important qualities of a leader is to be positive and optimistic. This would drive anyone to be positive throughout their life and spread only positive messages to others.
The final session was handled by Prof. Ankith Kumar on the topic “Empowering the youth towards excellence” The speaker reckoned the names of renowned personalities like Indira Gandhi, Swami Vivekanand, Narayana Murthy etc. He narrated the ups and down faced by them as a Leader. He said that every individual must have some inspiration in their lives. He also encouraged students to be a risk taker and practice patience and humbleness in one’s life.
The programme concluded with a brief valedictory session which included certificate distribution and feedback from participants.
