Life imprisonment for Accused in Sunanda Shetty murder case

Udupi: After seven years the district sessions court on May 24 sentenced the accused, Yogesh Poojary in Sunanda Shetty murder case to life imprisonment.

The district sessions judge Venkatesh sentenced life imprisonment to the accused Yogish Poojary (34) a resident of Herror.

According to the press release issued by Shanthi Bai the Public prosecutor, it is stated that on 21st December 2010 early morning 62-year-old Sunanda Shetty was found murdered in front of her house in Heroor village. Ornaments worn by her were taken away by the culprits and a white cap that is generally used by the people of a particular community was found lying near the dead body, which had led the investigation team to speculation.

The Police arrested Yogish (34) a resident of Heroor. Yogish Kumar Poojary, confessed to the murder of Sunanda Shetty and narrated the modus operendi to the investigating officer. Yogish a matriculate, hails from Heroor and resided a few yards away from the house of the deceased was running a small general store near Heroor bus stand. He had borrowed a huge amount of loan from different banks in Brahmavar and Udupi for his business and was not able to repay the loan due to heavy loss sustained in the business. In order to make up the loss, he had planned to commit the crime which would fetch him a big amount. The first target he choose was his immediate neighbour Sunanda Shetty who was living alone after the death of her husband in April-2010. Yogish kept a close watch on the activities of Sunanda Shetty and hatched a plan about 4 months back to do away with Sunanda Shetty for the sake of jewellery which she wore regularly. He had planned to attack Sunanda Shetty on a couple of occasions but could not succeed. Finally, on a fateful day at around 7:00 pm, Yogish went near the house of Sunanda Shetty and kept a watch on her movements in the dark, as she came out to clean the portico, Yogish attacked her from behind and strangulated her. Immediately he decamped with the gold ornaments she wore. After committing the crime, he went to a movie and returned home late that night after tying the packet containing gold ornaments to the branch of a tree. After his arrest, he took the investigation team to the place where he had hidden the gold ornaments containing one gold Mangalasutra, Two ear studs and Four Bangles all worth Rs 1,80,000. G Krishnamoorthy CPI Brahmavar submitted the Charge sheet to Udupi District and Sessions court. The District Sessions court conducted the hearings of the case and found Yogish guilty of the crime, and sentenced him to life imprisonment under IPC section 302 (murder) and to seven years of rigorous imprisonment under section 397 and a fine of Rs 25,000 was also imposed.
