Low-lying areas in Udupi Flood as Heavy Rains Lash District, Normal Life Disrupted
Udupi: Heavy rains have intensified in Udupi district for two days. Kundapur, Karkala, Hebri, Kaup, Brahmavar and Byndoor received heavy rains.
The low-lying areas have submerged on both sides of Nittur and Karavali Junction. As rainwater entered the houses, people were shifted to safer areas in some places. Schools and colleges were declared holidays. Most of the roads in the city were in ankle-deep water due to either drains being full or lack of drains.
The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rains in various parts of the coastal region till July 24.
The district received 135 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours. The Kundapur Taluk has received the highest 155 mm rainfall. Meanwhile, Udupi received 130 mm and Karkala Taluk received 90 mm of rainfall. Some of the low-lying areas in Udupi like Bailoor, Volakad and Chitpady experienced artificial flooding on Monday, July 22 following incessant rain.
Matadabettu, Badagubettu and Bannanje experienced artificial floods. The water level in Rivers Swarna, Papanashini, Kubja and Varahi has increased. Sea erosion has intensified at Thottam, Polipu, Ermal and Padubidri. Huge boulders dumped to check sea erosion were also washed away.
