Lucky Escape for Motorists in Serial Accident at Jeppu Patna Cross
Mangaluru: Traffic movement on the busy NH 66 was disrupted for some time due to a serial accident involving 2 cars and an auto at Jeppu Patna Cross here on July 24.
According to sources, the accident occurred between two cars and an auto moving in the same direction at the Jeppu Patna Cross on NH 66. One of the cars moving towards Pumpwell, after crossing the Ullal bridge hit an Auto moving on the left side of the road, swerved to the right, hit a drum placed by the traffic department to slow down the vehicles and then hit another car also moving on the same direction. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.
The police department is observing Traffic safety month and organizing various programmes to educate the public. But their efforts are in vain. A number of accidents occur because of the don’t care attitude of some motorists. There are a number of road accidents reported on Thokkottu, Ullal, Yekkur and Jeppu Patna Cross road and many have lost their lives.
A resident of Jeppu Patna speaking to mangalorean.com said, “Accidents are common in this place and happen almost every day. Many people have lost their lives due to over speed and negligence. The police department should permanently deploy a traffic police here to control the traffic. The vehicles move at a high speed on the highway and fail to notice vehicles coming from Jeppu Patna Cross to the main road. It is the need of the hour to deploy a traffic police to avoid such accidents.”
Another road user Vasanth speaking to mangalorean.com said, “Most of the accidents occur due to the pathetic condition of the roads. We are paying road tax but the government is not bothered to repair the roads. Even the flyover work in Pumpwell circle and Thokkottu is a total mess, the iron rods being used for the flyover work at Pumpwell have rusted. If such a situation continues, God only should save us. I use this road and curse myself for being a resident of Yekkur since I need to pass through the Pumpwell circle every day”.
