Madhwaraj Inaugurates Prevention of Communicable Diseases Week
Udupi: “Diseases can be controlled if the various departments, social organisations and the public join hands with the government,” said Minister for Fisheries, Youth Affairs and Sports and district minister in-charge, Pramod Madhwaraj. He was speaking after inaugurating the Prevention of Communicable Diseases Week – 2016, organised by the Zilla Panchayat, the District Health and Family Welfare Department, Rotary Club Udupi-Manipal, Rotary Club Malpe-Kodavoor and International Rotary 3182 Zone 3 and 4.
“Prevention is better than cure. The government alone cannot control diseases. Youth and social organisations should join hands with the government in this regard.” He also conveyed his wishes on Press Day and Doctors’ Day saying that while doctors cure diseases, journalists cure social diseases affecting society. The students who presented their essays on malaria were awarded with prizes by the minister.
Speaking on the occasion, ZP CEO Priyanka Mary Francis said, “We should keep our surroundings clean and awareness on the prevention of diseases should be communicated to our fellow citizens.”
DHO Dr Rohini in her keynote address said that the malaria cases have witnessed a fall in the district. 2200 cases were reported in 2013, 1639 in 2014, 1366 in 2015 and 293 in 2016.
President of ZP Education and Health Standing Committee, Uday Kotian presided over the programme.Rt Poornima Janardhan, Rt Prabhat, former Assistant Commissioner Rt K S Jai Vittal were present. District Malaria Officer Dr Premanad delivered the vote of thanks. Janardhan Kodavoor compered the programme.
