Margao: 4 Girls try to Commit Suicide Alleging Abuse by Apna Ghar Staffers

Margao-Goa: Following close on its heels, where a young athlete died and three of her colleagues were battling for life after they attempted suicide at the Sports Authority of India Centre in Sai, Kerala, because of harassment from seniors, which has prompted a stunned Sports Ministry to launch an inquiry, yet another suicide by four girls here at Apna Ghar in Merces-Goa was reported on late Wednesday.

High drama unfolded at Apna Ghar, Merces late Wednesday night when four girls, all juveniles, climbed the roof of one of its buildings and threatened to commit suicide. Fire Department officials, who were summoned at about 11:36 pm brought the girls down safely in a three-and-half-hour-long rescue operation.

According to police statements, the four girls complained of ill-treatment, harassment and abuse by the Apna Ghar staffers provoking them to take this step. The girls removed the window grills from where they climbed the roof. The other inmates raised an alarm after which the Panjim fire station was alerted. They sat on the edge of the roof threatening to jump off it if anyone approaches closer to them.

One of girl who was later exhausted, was brought down safely followed by two others. However, when the fourth girl was stubborn the rescuers seeked the help of Maria (women and child development official), where she climbed the roof and convinced the girl before bringing the girl down too. The girls were handed back to the Apna Ghar officials. No police complaint was registered till Thursday.
