Man Accused in Shootout in Jewellery Shop in Puttur Arrested
Puttur: A three-round shootout at Rajadhani Jewellers in the heart of the city at 7-25 pm on Oct 6, 2015, had created a scare in the region, although there was no injury.
Investigations revealed that the incident was part of an extortion attempt and to instill fear in the minds of select businessmen to pay up or face the consequences and not to kill anyone in fact.
‘Kalia’ Rafiq of Uppala in Kasaragod, a notorious underworld character currently lodged in a Veliyoor jail, is said to be the mastermind, who in turn is being controlled by ‘Kali’ Yogish, another don. Two young men were engaged by them to extort money from affluent entrepreneurs.
One of them who executed the shootout was arrested by the Puttur police on Friday. Abdul Asir (21) of Nangi of Kadappura Mogral in Kasaragod, was arrested by the Puttur police from near the Junior College in Kombettu. He had been paid Rs 50,000 for the shootout.
He was found moving around in a suspicious manner near the junior college by some members of the public. The police were informed and he was nabbed.
In view of a gang-war having broken out again in Uppala region, he had escaped from there and was trying to hide in Bengaluru by travelling by train from here.
He will be produced in court on Saturday.
