Sullia: Uday Kumar of Devangoor in Kotigehara in Chikkamagaluru district was arrested by the town police on a charge of claiming to be a sub-inspector in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
The very next morning Puttamma was found dead in a pond. Circumstantial evidence pointed at the possiblility of a murder, he had alleged.
During the investigations, Uday Kumar, posing himself as a CISF sub-inspector, regularly accompanied Girish during visits to the police station and used to speak on his behalf.
Since he had claimed to be an uniformed officer, the police from Sullia initially used to treat him with respect. But circle inspector Satish B S and sub-inspector Chandrashekhar, who are known for their tough and efficient handling of crime cases, noticed that Uday Kumar was trying to answer questions put to Girish.
This led to a suspicion about his credentials and they demanded to see his identity document, which he failed to produced. Their doubts were confirmed when he fumbled to answer questions. They arrested him and produced before the taluk magistrate and tahsildar. He was later let off on bail.
