Mangaluru: Mahesh Salian (24), a resident of Santoor near Belmannu village in Udupi taluk, had been convicted a few days ago, in connection with a case of cheating a young woman with promise of employment and marriage. The quantum of punishment was kept reserved.
He had been charged with collecting Rs 1.15 lakh with a promise of getting a job for her, forging the marks-card and also of sexual abuse. The first two charges were proved.
On Monday, Mar 21, judge D T Puttarangaswamy pronounced the verdict sentencing him to rigorous imprisonment for three years.
He gets a year and eight months each in separate case of cheating with promise of employment and forging the marks-card. A fine of Rs 20,000 has also been imposed on him.
Failure to pay the fine will make him liable to another two months of simple imprison. Out of the fine paid, Rs 15,000 shall be paid to the victim.
Public prosecutor Judith O M Crasta had argued for the prosecution.
