Started in the year 2011 by Dr Suresh Rao, today after eight years MIO is at the Forefront of cancer care, and has provided dedicated service to their patients. On the occasion of its 8th Anniversary, “MIO Day” was observed on Saturday, 5 October 2019. On this occasion, the MD and Radiation Oncology Head of MIO, Dr Suresh Rao was felicitated for treating over 25,000 cancer patients with radiation therapy, during his practice abroad and in Mangaluru. The programme began by invoking God’s blessings, and the inauguration was done by lighting the lamp by MIO President Ananthkrishna; Dr M S Vidyasagar-HoD of Dept of Oncology at Father Muller Hospital; Dr Vijayakumar- Vice Chancellor at Yenepoya University; and the four main pillars and senior Oncologists at MIO- Dr Suresh Rao, Dr Jalaluddin Akbar, Dr Sanath Hegde and Dr Krishna Prasad.
On the occasion, the MIO Health Card; MIO Brochure with new Logo; and MIO-Kerala Scheme were released by the dignitaries on the dais. Regarding the MIO Health Card, it is a scheme to support the economically weak APL Card holders of Karnataka and Kerala, and Dr Jalaluddin and Dr Krishna Prasad expressed that when an individual is affected with cancer, it also affects the whole family and that at times the financial constrains severely affects the initiation and continuation of the treatment and that through this unique Health Card, MIO proposes to reduce the burden on the economically marginalized population of Karnataka and Kerala.
Dr Vijay Kumar, Vice Chancellor of Yenepoya University addressing the audience said, “No doubt MIO has given a new life to thousands of cancer affected patients, and we need to compliment the doctors and health care personnel of MIO for their dedicated and selfless efforts in caring and treating the patients. MIO having the First Rapid R equipment in Managaluru is very beneficial to treat patients. Even though we have 494 medical colleges in the state, but the early detection of cancer is lacking very much. People are scared to go in for early detection, which later creates more complications. If treatment is done earlier, there are good chances of getting cancer cured. Only a small percentage of people get treated for the cancer at the very first stage. Your health is in your hands, and your life is within yourselves. Try to detect cancer at the earliest so that it can be cured. My humble request is that Act Fast before it’s too late”
Dr Vidyasagar, who was also the teacher of Dr Suresh complimenting Dr Rao being a smart and favourite student of his said, “Dr Suresh is a dedicated, committed and very good at treating children, and adults. His decision to open MIO was a good idea and it has reached greater heights in the last eight years of its inception. Dr Suresh is a great asset in this medical field in treating cancer patients”.
MLA Vedavyas Kamath said, “Since Mangaluru is not far from Kerala, many Keralites and other parts to Mangaluru come to MIO to get treated. When it comes to quality, positive result, treatment, hospitality, Mangaluru provides you with all these facilities.I need the support from all hospitals in Mangaluru so that we can introduce Medical Tourism, since many foreigners are seeking medical treatment in Mnagluru, since it is affordable. There is a huge potential for this medical tourism, and we should try to introduce it in Mangaluru at the earliest. MIO is doing a great job in caring and treating cancer patients, and I wish the MIO team of doctors and staff all success.”
Director of MIO Dr Suresh Rao after being felicitated on achieving the rare distinction of having treated over 25,000 patients with radiation therapy in his medical career, in his words of appreciation thanked the doctors, health care staff, patients and caregivers for extending their support to MIO. “When I was in Father Muller Hospital, there was no oncology, and therefore I had to initiate oncology department treating for about 700 patients a year. But after launching MIO, we treated over 1000 patients a year. When I started MIO it was not a easy job, including getting employees. I had huge loans in the beginning, but happy to say that MIO now is debt free”
“And since we don’t have to pay any interests on bank loans, we decided to offer those savings to our patients, through our schemes we launched today. Running a private hospital is not an easy job. As of now we do not have any loans to pay and can save a bit. MIO will be intensifying its efforts in prevention and control of the disease. We will also strive towards providing modern treatment with compassion and empathy. And for our success your support and encouragement is very much needed” added Dr Suresh. While appreciating the support from his senior employees, Dr Rao felicitated them on the occasion.
Among the doctors who support Dr Suresh at MIO, Dr Jalaluddin, the chief surgical oncologist said, “Treating 25,000 cancer patients is a great achievement for any doctor. Dr Rao with his dedication and hard work has made a difference in each of these 25K patients, and given them a new life. The success rate at MIO was around 57%, which was another feather in the cap of Dr Rao, who was a visionary. His short stint in the hospitals in the Gulf compelled him to open MIO, which is a state-of-the-art institute for cancer patients coming from in and around Mangaluru, and nearby Kerala. We are proud of Dr Suresh Rao, and blessed to work with him at MIO”.
The welcome address was delivered by MIO Oncologist Dr Sanath Hegde, and dietitian at MIO Ms Rhea D’Souza compered the event. very professionally. The formal function ended with a dazzling cultural programme comprising of dance and singing performances, which received loud applaud from the audience.
