Mangalore prodigy Shriyana Mallya wins National Gold in Under 7 Girls Chess

Mangalore’s fast emerging chess prodigy 6-year-old Shriyana Mallya has won the Gold medal in the under 7 girls category in National Schools chess Championship held at Nagpur from 5th to 7th January 2017.

She had scored 8 points in 9 rounds and claimed the gold with a clear point lead.

By this performance, she is qualified to represent India in the World and Asian school chess championship to be held at Romania and China respectively.

She is studying in 1st standard in Lourdes Central school. She is the daughter of Sandeep and Nandini Mallya of Mangalore.

In 2016 playing her first Under 7 girls chess championship in Mandya, Shriyana delivered a strong performance to bag the runner-up position and had qualified for the Nationals. In the nationals, she finished credible 14th. Again playing state school championship of 2017 edition, she proved too strong for her group by clinching the title with unbeaten performance. Within a very short time, proving herself at the nationals again Shriyana has very brights prospects of bringing international medals.

Another talent, Aatish Shetty of Lourdes Central School also gave a credible performance, but just fell short by tiebreak points and had to be content for 5th position with 7 points in 8 rounds in Under 11 boys category.
