Mangalore University Champs in All India Inter University Cross Country Championship for Men

 

Moodbidri: Mangalore University has emerged team champion for fifth time in All India Inter University Cross Country Championship for Men 2019-20, organized by Mangalore University and Alva’s Education Foundation, Moodbidri on Sunday.

Mangalore University (30 points) emerged team champions, while Punjab University, Patiala (53 points), finished second. Savithri Bai Phule Pune University (62 points), Sant Baba Bhag Singh University( 85 points) , Maharshi Dayananad University ( 136 points) secured third, fourth and fifth places respectively. Narendra Prathap( 31:52.00) of Mangalore University, Pintu Kumar Yadav ( 32:13.00) of Punjabi University Patiala, Sathishkumar SH ( 32:22.00) of Madras University, Abdul Bari (32:30.00) of Mangalore University, Mahan Saini ( 32:49.00) of Kumaun Unvrsity, Nainital, Rohith Yadav( 32: 58.00) of RGUHS Karnataka secured first ,second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth places respectively in individual category.

The event involved a 10 k.m run, which was flagged off by Police Commissioner Dr PS Harsha, at 7am from Nishmitha Towers in the city. Mangalore University Vice Chancellor Dr PS Yadapadithaya distributed the prizes to winners. Applauding the efforts of Alva’s Education Foundation in fostering and nurturing sports talents he said, MU is blessed to have Alva’s college has an affiliated college in it and it is a true feature in University’s cap.

Alva’ s Education Foundation had given Rs 50,000 for team champion and Rs 25,000 for first individual champion, Rs 20,000 for second, Rs 15,000 for third individual champion, Rs 10,000 for fourth individual champion, Rs 5,000 for fifth and sixth individual champions respectively. Interestingly, all the six students who represented Mangalore University and emerged champions were the students of Alva’s college.

Atomized transponders and digital clocks were been used to record the timing and position of the participants. A total of 175 Universities with 1500 athletes participated in the event. Alva’s Education Foundation Chairman Dr M Mohan Alva, Karnataka Janapada University Former Vice-Chancellor Dr Chinnappa Gowda, MU Physical Education Director and Organizing Secretary Dr Kishore Kumar, International Athlete Babu Shetty, Senior Coach Harpal Singh, Social Worker Prasad Rai, Principal Dr Kurian were present among others.
