Mangaluru: Some anti-social and criminal-minded characters, who perhaps do not have the courage to face those they do not like direct, have a tendency to abuse the Internet facility. They create fake e-mail IDs and Facebook accounts and circulate derogatory material to others.

Because of the tough cyber-laws, the activity had subsided to some extent. But a recent supreme court ruling on the section 66A of the IT Act and its wrong interpretation might have emboldened some of them.

Megha (name changed), aged 17 and residing near Sultan Battery in the city, has filed a complaint at the Barke police station, alleging that a fake account has been opened in her name and her details and photographs posted without her knowledge. On learning of the abuse, she has stated that she never had any account in the Facebook and asked the police to trace the culprits and take suitable action against them.

The police have registered a case.

The shameless acts of the spineless:

Some unscrupulous people indulge in this kind of character assassination. This crime had subsided but of late a few individuals have taken advantage of the recent Supreme Court judgement to their advantage by finding loopholes to enable them to carry out their criminal acts against people.

Hope the Police will trace the people responsive for the crime
