Addressing the mediapersons, President of the Mangalore Bar Association S P Chengappa said that the state bar association has staged a protest for the safety of the advocates because they do not have safety in the country. “Advocates fight for the rights of their clients.”

“On March 11, police sub inspector Shailendra Singh and Nabi Ahmed had a heated argument. Immediately, the Sub inspector pulled out his revolver and allegedly shot Nabi Ahmed at point blank range.” He alleged that it was a pre-planned attack on the advocate to kill him. “Police brutality in this country is rampant. The police act like demons.”

“A member of the Mangalore Bar Association Naushad was murdered, Preetham Kumar is still missing, Dinesh Ulipady was attacked but the accused has not been arrested.”

“The Bar council condemns the act of the police and demands to increase the compensation to Rs one crore to the family of the deceased. The Uttar Pradesh government has given Rs 10 lakh compensation to the deceased family because advocates do not have insurance, gratuity or PF. If stringent action is not taken against the police sub inspector Shailendra Singh, we will intensify our protest. Another advocate Chandan who was severely injured should also be compensated and his medical expenses should be borne by the government. The central government should intervene and provide safety to the advocates and arrest the sub-inspector. Shailendra Singh should be arrested within 24 hours, failing to do so, the Bar Association will intensify their protest throughout the country,” he said.

General Secretary, Mangalore Bar Association Raghavendra Rao, Treasurer Yathish, Joint secretary Sumana Sharan, Yashodhara Karkera, Stanley R D’Costa and others were also present.
