Mangaluru: Congress party leaders remembered former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 24th death anniversary here at the District Congress Office, Hampankatta on May 21.

Speaking on the occasion, MLC Ivan D’Souza said that Rajiv Gandhi took office after the assassination of his mother Indira Gandhi to become the youngest Indian Prime Minister. “He became the PM at a very young age, he increased government support for science and technology. His efforts created MTNL in 1986, and helped spread telephones in rural areas. He dreamt of an India that is strong, independent, self-reliant and in the forefront of the nations of the world in the service of mankind. He was killed 24 years ago but his dream is still being carried out by the Congress party. For the upcoming Gram Panchayat elections, our party has selected more than 58% youth candidates to contest in Sullia alone.”

Leader of Youth Congress Mithun Rai said, “Rajiv Gandhi thought of the importance of the youth in nation building years ago. When he tried to introduce computers and other technology, people were afraid and thought that the introduction of IT would put them out of their jobs, but today the IT sector has contributed a lot in terms to the economy of our country, and we are all enjoying the benefits of science and technology.”
