Mangaluru: Even though there is a huge golf course near Pilikula, there were plans to open one more golf course cum resort near Tannirbhavi. Having come know about this, residents of Kasaba Bengre, Tannirbhavi and surrounding villages had staged a protest opposing the proposed 18-hole golf course-cum-resort in public-private partnership on the ground that the project would deprive them of their relation with the sea.
B.K. Imtiyaz- President of Democratic Youth Federation of India addressing the protesters said, ” It is surprise to note that the Coastal Regulatory Zone norms have not prevented the proposed golf resort. If you look at it, when it comes for regularisation of dwellings of the poor, the government adheres to CRZ norms, but when it comes to the rich, the very same government allows violation of the norms. Why do we need one more golf course in Mangaluru?”
It is learnt that the government through the tourism department has leased out 135 acres of land at Tannirbhavi village to Opus Laguna Golf and Resorts Pvt., Ltd., to build the golf course as well as 150-room luxury resort. The company has already taken possession of the land and is in the process of building protection wall abutting the sea shore.
Taking about the protection wall, Imtiyaz said, “The protection wall would prevent fishermen from the region from venturing into the sea. People who have been living for years with the sea are being deprived of their livelihood in the name of promotion of tourism. Government and other authorities should know that Bengre is a beautiful village sandwiched between Phalguni (Gurupura) River and the Arabian Sea, and project like this will destroy the beauty of this area”
In a memorandum submitted to the DC, members of the The Federation have urged the government to drop the golf course project; to stop construction of the protection wall; provide civic amenities to the residents of Bengre and to clear the Superstar playground to facilitate sports activities.
We are not fully aware of the geographical location and the ramifications attached to creating a Golf Course and the luxury app apartments at Thannirbhavi. But all that we know is that a Golf Course with all the beautiful surroundings have certainly a short term and long benefits for Mangalore.
