Mangaluru: DySP Jayant V Shetty Promoted as SP Intelligence

Mangaluru: Long-serving police officer Jayant V Shetty, hitherto serving as deputy superintendent of police in the city, has been promoted to the rank of superintendent of police, intelligence. He took over on Wednesday and is likely to continue in the same headquarters.

He had joined the police service as sub inspector in 1981. Having served in different places like Naxal-affected Karkala, Ullal, Bhatkal, Udupi and Mangaluru, he has won the President’s, the Chief Minister’s and the UN Peace Force medals in recognition of his efficiency.

While serving as the head of the anti-rowdy squad from 1995, he had nabbed as many as 163 criminal elements during his tenure. The squad, with him leading it, had  brought the underworld activity in the coastal districts almost under total control.

One of his greatest achievements was in the arrest of three Pakistani nationals while they were attempting to smuggle gold worth Rs 8 crore into India in 1988.

Among others are the arrest of associates of Riaz Bhatkal and Chhota Shakil’s henchmen like Rashid Malbari. He also was instrumental in the cracking of the sensational theft of 5 kg gold ornaments from Chemmanur Jewellers in 2007.
