Mangaluru: “Electricity is the oxygen of the 21st century. To eradicate poverty and for the development of the nation, electricity is very essential. Nuclear technologies are used in various fields like cancer treatment, power generation and food processing,” said R K Singh, Head of Media Relations and Public Awareness Section, Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC), Mumbai, at a programme held at Bearys Institute of Technology, here on February 11.
He was inaugurating the outreach programme organized under the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the Department of Atomic Energy, BARC, Mumbai.
Prof Balakrishna, Department of Physics, Mangalore University was the chief guest. In his address, he said, “Young minds should be involved in the development of the country. Without power, we are powerless,” he said.
Prof Sheshadri, ex-scientist, IGCAR Kalpakam, gave a brief history and lifestyle of Homi J Bhabha, the founder of BARC.
Dr Palakshappa, presided over the function and said, “You are as young as your dreams”. The coordinator, Dr M A Baig, welcomed the gathering and Dr Shivaprakash delivered the vote of thanks.
The formal function was followed by a seminar and an exhibition. The topic for the seminar was ‘Methods and Materials of Nuclear Fusion and Nuclear Fission’. The exhibition was witnessed by more than 2000 students from schools and colleges in and around Mangalore.
