Director of FMCI Fr Patrick Rodrigues welcomed the gathering and introduced the chief guest Dr K S Ravindranath MD DM (Cardiology) DNB, Vice Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences – Karnataka and the guest of honour Dr Ibrahim Ahmad Bajunid, Deputy vice chancellor, INTI International University, Malaysia. Fr Patrick read out the service to humanity with the motto “Heal and Comfort” and the activities of the various units of Fr Muller Charitable Institutions for the year 2014 to 2015.

Dr K S Ravindranath MD DM and Dr Ibrahim Ahmad Bajunid distributed the graduation certificates and medals to the students of General Nursing and the Homeopathic Medical students. After the distribution of the certificates and medals, all the graduates were administered the oath to respect all life, human dignity and rights.

Addressing the gathering Dr K S Ravindranath said, “I know how difficult it is to get into the medical profession. A person requires merit and determination to get into this field. You have made a good choice by choosing to enter into the medical field. Medical profession requires a lot of time as the courses are lengthier than others. But once you are done with them, you can serve in this field longer.”

“You should have the passion to serve people. You should not work for money or fame. If you follow the motto to serve people, you will automatically receive their goodwill and respect. Whatever the profession, we should all be good human beings first.”

“Today, we have lost patience with the patients. We need to attend to the patient first and not see if he/she can pay or not. We should talk with them to get to know their problems better and they should be given atleast the minimum medical checkup availble. Most of the time, the patients who come to the hospital may be poor. But when a patient comes to a hospital, we make them do all kinds of tests. Just because we have all facilities or equipment at our disposal, does not mean that we should tell the patient to do all of them. Only the tests that are required should be done because most of the time, some of the tests are unnecessary.”

Speaking on the importance of teachers, he said that knowledge can be acquired from many avenues but the experience and guidance from the teachers is indispensable to their careers. He also said that with the declining quality in education, theoretical knowledge is not sufficient to deal with real problems and that practical experience was very important for success in the field. “The quality of education should be made standard across all colleges in the country. We also need more health professionals as the need for them exceeds the supply. In our country, two-thirds of the population resides in rural areas, but most of the health centres are in urban areas. Advancements in this field will not be useful if they are not received by the needy.” He concluded by congratulating all the graduates and their parents and wished them success in the future.

V G Diocese of Mangaluru and VP of FMCI Msgr Denis Moras Prabhu delivered the presidential address. Administrator FMMC Fr Rudolph D’Sa delivered the vote of thanks. Jane Thomas and Stephanie D’Souza compered the programme. The institution anthem was sung by the students of FMCI. A variety entertainment was held by the students of FMCI.
