Mangaluru: Akshaya Tritiya is regarded as an auspicious day on many counts, but a special stress is laid on purchase of gold.

There are many people who disregard the theory of any luck being involved in buying of gold on a certain day and call it a business gimmick introduced by gold dealers during recent years. They point out that there was no such concept in vogue two decades ago and earlier. However, the belief appears to be sinking its roots deep in the coastal districts with the passing of each year.

A clear evidence was seen on the Akshaya Tritiya day this year, April 21. In addition to the perceived significance of the day was its being a public holiday in the state on account of Basava Jayanti. The gold shops all over the undivided district registered brisk business. The holiday factor may have contributed to the 10% increase in the overall sales.

According to figures available, a total of 1.40 quintal gold, valued at Rs 49 crore was sold in Dakshina Kannada district, while in Udupi – made of Udupi, Karkala and Kundapur taluks – the sale was of 60 kgs of gold and 1 quintal of silver, aggregating to Rs 23 crore.

Leading shops had arranged for advance, online booking. This allowed a large number of buyers to choose the ornaments at leisure.

As more and more gold will be flaunted by the buyers during public functions in the coming days, there will be the hazard of theft and robbery too, which has to be borne in mind, said a social worker.
