Mangaluru: The Minster for Youth Service, Sports and Fisheries, Abhaychandra Jain, held a press meet at Hotel Foodlands here on May 3.
Addressing the mediapersons, Jain said that the 19th Federation Cup is going on smoothly. “Athletes have made new records. Even when the arrangements are very systematic, there were some mistakes which we have corrected them. The athletes, coaches and other officials who have come here are satisfied with the facilities provided by the organizers. Our intention was to develop the Mangala Stadium and hence, we agreed to host the 19th Federation Cup in Mangaluru. Even the Chief Minister released Rs 1 crore to host the event. When we had proposed to beautify the stadium with greenery, the Kannada and Culture department released Rs 20 lakh for the beautification of the stadium. We have purchased Rs 65 lakh worth of sports equipment for the event through Sports department.”
Jain further said that to host the federation cup is not a one man show. “It is a joint effort of the Karnataka Amateur Athletic federation, the district administration and the district athletic federation. Our athletes have broken the meet records in discuss throw and javelin throw and have won gold. Gold winners who have made a new meet record from Karnataka will receive Rs 25,000 cash awards.”
He also said, “The new sports equipment will be put to use in the Mangala Stadium because there are many budding athletes in Dakshina Kannada and they can use the equipment to practice in the stadium. Excess equipment will be sent to Moodabidri and Udupi stadiums, since there are many athletes there who can benefit. As many as 700 athletes practice everyday in the Moodabidri stadium.”
Speaking on the occasion, Manjunath Bhandary said, “One of the most anticipated events tomorrow is the 400m Women’s race; there will be a tough fight between Poovamma and Tinku Luka in this event. Also, P T Usha has been training athletes from the past two months at Mangala stadium and due to this event, our athletes have received the opportunity to be trained by her. It is a blessing for our athletes to be trained by Usha and also to meet and interact with national and international athletes.”
He further said that more than hundred technical officers had answered a selection examination in which 60 qualified, of the qualified 60, 20 of officers are from Udupi and Mangaluru. Hereafter, they will be eligible as qualified technical officers in any national sports events. While concluding, Bhandary apologizing, took the responsibility for any shortcomings during the event.
