Mangaluru: Information dept Holds ‘Centenary celebration of Mahatma Gandhi’s first visit to Karnataka’

Mangaluru: The information department held Centenary celebration of Mahatma Gandhi’s first visit toKarnataka, at the department office here on May 8.

The programme began with an invocation. Information officer Khader Shah welcomed the gathering. The programme was inaugurated by the president of Kannada Sahitya Parishat Pradeep Kumar Kalkura by lighting the traditional lamp along with other dignitaries.

Addressing the gathering Pradeep Kumar Kalkura said that, Hundred years ago, in 1915 on May 8,Gandhiji came to Karnataka, and today we are celebrating his first visit to the state. He further said, “In India everything is possible, Devegowda, being a farmer, become the Prime Minister of India, a tea boy has become the prime minister, We talk about women empowerment and Indira Gandhi created history by becoming the prime minister of this country. India is the only country where we see wonders happening”.

He also said that Gandhiji has taught us to respect other religions and non-violence. Especially in young people, there is a constant flow of energy. They are dynamic, vibrant and excessively energetic. As we progress, we need to carry forward Gandhiji’s ideologies to our next generation. This celebration should not be for a day, but it should continue. The best tribute which we can give to the Father of the Nation, is the pledge to build the nation of his dreams.

Principle Badriya College Prof Ismail also spoke on the occasion.
