Mangaluru : Krishna Kini, a Diploma holder in Computer Science from SNM Polytechnic-Moodabidri has created a unique device called ” Kins Interface” where you can interact with your computer using your hands (without the mouse) and a white board. Addressing the media persons during a press meet held at Mangalore Press Club, Kini along with M Guruprasad Prabhu-Lecturer in Mechanics and Dr Gurudas SP- Lecturer in Electronics and Communications (both of SNM Polytechnic) on the dais gave the following details :

Kins interface is the computer user interface by which user can interact with computer on a white board place on the desk by gesture or touch. User can interact with computer on white board by moving his hand on the board. The user’s hand is visible on screen in transparent form, this gives the impression that that his hand is on the computer screen. When the user wants to click something on screen the user needs to put his hand on desired position on board and press touch button resulting in a click. Kins interface doesn’t require mouse. This will work on any applications like MS office, any games where mouse input is required. User can rest his hand on board without causing accidental touches because touch activity in kins interface is initiated only when user presses touch button. This is developed by Krishna Kini hence named as kins interface. Following components are required for kins interface.

1) Selfie stick is used as stand for web camera.
2) Web cam.
3) White board with touch buttons at left hand side.
4) Windows 7 or higher system.
5) Kins interface Software developed using c++.

Above image shows the arrangement of the kins interface system.

Above image shows basic working of user interface.

Web cam continuously shoots the whiteboard area and displays the same on the screen in transparent form with background application objects without disturbing application window. When the user clicks the touch button the software searches for finger or stylus position in X,Y coordinate and generates software mouse click. User can use finger, any object like stylus, pen, pencils to interact. The transparent level of hand can be changed at desired level and also the size of user hand also changed.

Advantages

Compare to the touch sensitive screen kins interface very simple and cheap.
In touch sensitive technology when user hand is on the screen, our hand blocks the screen visibility whereas in kins interface hand portion is visible in transparent mode.
In the kins interface the user hand is visible on the screen thus it gives real feel of objects on the screen.
User can rest hand on white board without fear of accidental touch hence less stress on hand.
Video games can be played in realistic and unique ways.

Disadvantages

Kins interface doesn’t work in dark since web camera needs light.
Since webcam shoots white board area and displays the same in transparent form on screen, white board’s noise images disturb the back ground application elements.

75% of prototype Kins interface is ready and working. Planning to make it multi touch sensitive and also add new features such as to move objects by hand. It was developed for the past 15 months using c++. The source code is of 753 lines. My intention was to develop 3D mouse using webcam; accidentally I got this idea and developed this. S. N.M.Polytechnic Institutional patent filing is in process for kins interface.

As the user moves hand on board simultaneously the hand on screen also moves accordingly which gives the user the impression that his hand is touching the screen.

User can also interact with computer as shown below.

User can interact with computer above the white board also
