Mangaluru: The Kadri police have arrested a chain snatcher at Nanthur here, on April 30.
The arrested has been identified as Sooraj (31), a resident of Kadri toll gate.
According to the police, on January 17, Sooraj and his brother Dhanraj went near Kadri Temple. Both brothers assaulted Ravichandra Bhat who was waiting outside near his house, snatched his 34 gm gold chain and fled from the spot. Later, both brothers were arrested on February 5.
Fifteen days ago Sooraj was out on bail but his brother did not get bail. Sooraj tried to arrange for money but failed. So, he decided to get back to his old habit of chain snatching. On April 21, when a woman, Shymala, was walking on the Karangalpady road, Sooraj who came on a motorbike snatched her chain and fled. Shymala tried to catch him, but failed.
A case was registered in the Kadri police station, while describing the thief, she identified him to have long hair. With the clue, the Kadri police found a matching description in their files. Soon after police arrested Sooraj at Nanthur. During interrogation, Sooraj revealed that he had mortgaged the chain with a jeweler as he needed the money for his brother’s bail. Dhanraj got bail on April 30 in the Ravinchandra Bhat chain snatching case.
It is learnt that Sooraj is a drug addict. Under the direction of Police Commissioner S Murugan and able guidance of DCP crime Vishnuverdhan, theKadri Police Inspector T D Nagaraj led the operation along with PSI Bajanthri,ASI Krishna, Sheshappa Poojary, Venkatesh, Vinay, Madan, Ajith and Ravi.
