Also speaking during the press meet, Dr Ashvini Kumar Head of Department, Radiodiagnosis & Imaging, KMC Hospital Mangaluru said, “1.5 Tesla MRI comes with a wide range of applications and advantages which has become necessary for clinical decision making in modern healthcare. Be it neurology, orthopedics, pediatric imaging, vascular imaging, oncological imaging (imaging for cancers) the advantages of 1.5 Tesla are many fold. With a stronger magnet comes the advantage of faster imaging as in cases of acute stroke where timely intervention can prevent a lifetime of disability. Better resolution results in clearer images. The clarity of images are of great significance in imaging of nerves, vessels and other small parts. MR spectroscopy and perfusion which are routinely performed at both our centres (KMC Hospital Attavar and Ambedkar circle) helps in increasing the specificity of diagnosis in neurological and prostate imaging. Whole body diffusion MR has helped greatly in the staging of cancers which is necessary for determining the course of treatment and timely intervention.”

“Upgrading to 16 slice CT from a single slice is a move towards better imaging of the whole body in terms of patient care as well as image quality. 16 slice CT acquires thinner slices as compared to single slice CT which produces sharper and more detailed images. Compared to a single slice CT a 16 slice CT captures images 4 to 5 times faster which reduces artefacts due to patient movement and breathing. In scenarios like trauma where time is of utmost importance a 16 slice CT clearly scores over a single slice CT. The ability of synthesizing three- dimensional (3D) images which gives important information regarding small anatomical details is a great advantage of a 16 slice CT. 3D images are quint essential in modern day orthopedic and vascular imaging. Other advantages include multiplanar reconstruction, volume rendering and maximum intensity projection. A multislice CT is definitely a step in the right direction in patient care, imaging and decision making in times of medical and surgical emergencies” stated Dr Ashvini Kumar.

The inauguration will be followed by a felicitation ceremony to honour Dr D Veerendra Heggade for being conferred the prestigious Padma Vibhushan award in recognition of his immense contribution to society, especially in rural development and empowerment to women and youth through employment generation.
