Mangaluru listed in ‘Smart City’, Mayor thanks PM and CM

Mangaluru: The Mayor of Mangaluru city corporation Harinath thanked Prime minister Narendra Modi, Chief minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah, district minister in-charge Ramanath Rai and all the MLA’s for helping Mangaluru to be listed in the second phase of Smart cities.

Mayor Harinath, addressing the mediapersons at the MCC on September 20 said that the Union urban development minister Venkaiah Naidu has released the second list of smart cities in which Mangaluru, Shivamogga, Tumkur, Hubballi and Dharwad cities have been named to be developed as smart cities. 27 cities named in the second list will be developed.

The Mayor also said, “We have resources which are not used in the right way. Yes, we are very happy that our city has been listed in the smart city list but at the same time, we need to work together to make this city a model one in the country”.

Addressing the mediapersons commissioner of MCC, Mohammed Nazir said that we have prepared an area based proposal of 1628 acres identified in central business district around Hampankatta, Bunder and Carstreet proposed for retrofitting and redevelopment under SCM;
Central Civic Node – 100 acres
Hampankatta junction retail node – 27 acres
Fisheries Harbour redevelopment – 22 acres
Old port redevelopment – 10 acres
upgraded temple precinct / religious zone – 57 acres
Waterfront and Marina development – 25 acres
Mixed-use zone for IT services, offices, Small scale, industries, hospitality, and leisure alongside limited capacity factory functioning by adaptive reuse of tile factories – 42 acres
Upgrading district general hospitals – 17 acres
Public connector streets leading to waterfront development as commercial and retail zone – 47 acres
Solar farm on the island facing Bunder – 20 acres.

Pan city proposal

Integrated citizen interface platform with dual access – “One touch Mangalore”, through mobile and “One Access Mangalore”, through the web.
Smart utility management will leverage the use of technology in utility systems to achieve tangible improvement in availability and utilization of public utility services.

Mohammed Nazir further said, “We have submitted a financial plan with a total indicative project cost of Rs 2000 crores.

The committee suggested to explore the following:
Convergence with the proposal of converting the Ol DC office into a museum and other projects of tourism department. Proposed strategic plan consisting of economic growth centres over next 20 years with MCC funding may be considered post approval of SCP by MoUD. To develop Mangalore as a Cruise Hub to attract the tourists. Finding an Anchor for Marina project for funding and users. Possibility to connect old port river front with the proposed Cruise terminal at New Mangaore port.

Corporator Appi, Roopa D Bangera and others were also present.

Well, it sums up everything you need to know about this high level of enthusiasm in ‘smart city’ initiative while zero interest in ‘swachcha bhaaratha’ campaign. If PM offers 2000 koti rupaayees for swachcha mangalooru, you will see a sudden change in behavior. I hope media is making a note of this.

There’s nothing SMART about Mangalore city and those behind such schemes if newly laid concrete roads such as the road Fr. Muller’s leading to the Morgan Gate have been constructed without the foresight of pavements and drainage. So much money is being spent – why do – whoever strategise such developments – why do they carry out the road works first, then the drainage, and then the pavement – in other SMART countries, these 3 basics infrastructure works are carried out as one project at one time!
