Mangaluru: The locals of Kadri staged a protest against the MCC for the negligence and delay in carrying out the road concreting work at Kadri here, on March 4.
Addressing the protesters, social activist Gerald Towers said, “There are a number of hotels here where people come everyday. There is also a clinic where patients come for treatment. Without asking anyone’s opinion, the road has been dug up and left without any work from the past 13 days. Even though this is a very important road in the city, the authorities are not concerned of finishing the concrete work at the earliest to avoid inconvenience to the commuters who use the road everyday. Under the consumer act, we can file a complaint and go to the court for justice.”
He further said that according to the rules, the name and telephone number of the contractor as well as the cost of the project should be mentioned in a board near the construction site. “But here, they did not put any notification and we do not know who the contractor is and whom we should approach.”
“Recently, three people died at the Nanthur Junction. The same situation will arise here too if this continues. District Minister In-charge Ramanath Rai and MLA J R Lobo have also advised against prolonging the road work but no action has been taken. The situation is such that without insurance, people cannot walk on the road.” He also advised the youth not to come out on the roads without insurance.
Without mentioning the corporator’s name, Gerald said, “One ward corporator does not come to the ward, but photographs of the corporator appear on huge hoardings. Corporator Ashok is doing his work faithfully but his photographs do not appear anywhere. Some are playing games by delaying the road concreting work to defame corporator Ashok. Moreover, dug up concrete is placed on the road like the World Cup kept in a showcase”, said Towers.
He urged the concerned authorities to start the work immediately to prevent any untoward incidents from taking place.
