Mangaluru: An LPG cylinder which was lying abandoned on the railway track near Padil cross was hit by a passing train on Monday.

When the driver realized that something had hit the wheels, he brought the train to immediate halt. As he got down to inspect the situation, he found the cylinder in a smashed state.

As luck would have it, the cylinder was an empty one. If it was gas-filled, the consequences would have been unimaginable.

It is suspected that the person who was carrying it and crossing the track might have suddenly realized that the train was approaching and run away after leaving it behind on the track.

The driver handed over the cylinder to the authorities at the Mangaluru junction railway station.
