Mangaluru:  Minister of State for Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fisheries, K Abhaychandra Jain released the invitation of the 19th Federation Cup – National Senior Athletics Championship 2015 at Mangala Stadium here, on April 22.

After releasing the invitation, Abhaychandra Jain said, “For the first time, we have received an opportunity to host the Federation Cup.” He further said that in Udupi, the stadium is well equipped and fully developed. “In Moodbidri, the Swaraj Maidan is also well developed with synthetic track but in Mangala stadium it was lacking. “In Mangaluru, we have a number of athletes who do not get the opportunity to take part in national and international sports due to lack of training and facilities in the stadium. We have to upgrade the stadium with all the requirements so that more and more athletes come to the stadium for practice and prepare themselves for the respective sport.”

Installing permanent flood lights in the stadium are not feasible at present, said Jain. “At present, we are using temporary flood lights at a cost of Rs 22 lakhs along with diesel for generators and other expenses. We will also use the additional funds for the extension of the gallery.”

“The ground is all set for the federation cup. The Sports department has provided Rs 50 lakh worth of sports equipment for the event. MCC has spent Rs 20 lakhs for the warm up track and beautification of the area. Rs 9 lakhs will be spent for NADA (doping test centre) set up in the Mangala stadium heritage building.”
Jain urged the media for their co-operation to make this event a grand success.

Addressing the mediapersons, President of the District Athletics Association, Manjunath Bhandary said that the Sports department has already provided 75% of the sports equipment and the remaining equipment will arrive before April 26.
“All the arrangements are under progress. We have booked 350 rooms under the leadership of DC Ibrahim. More than 900 state and corporate delegates will be attending the event. The Mangala Heritage building will be upgraded and set as Doping Test Centre (NADA).”
P T Usha speaking on the occasion said, “I feel that the Mangala stadium has developed very much since I last came to Mangaluru in 1986. The facilities were not upto the mark then, but now I see a lot of development.”
