Mangaluru: The National Chief Secretary of the Communist Party of India, S Sudhakar Reddy held a press meet at KBEA  Hall, Kapikad, Bejai here, on January 27.

Addressing the mediapersons, Reddy said that the rise in prices of essential commodities was affecting the poor section of the society. “Unfortunately the government is concentrating its efforts on increasing FDI in the country. This will only help to loot the country and will prove disastrous to the country,” he added.

Reddy said that the top companies had made an extra profit of Rs 1 lakh crore and the Narendra Modi government has reduced the tax on corporates from 30% to 25%. “This government is of the corporates, by the corporates and for the corporates,” he said.

He further said that there were certain intolerant groups which were trying to silence the people working on various issues. “Why is the Prime Minister silent on these issues?” he asked. Though we said that Mahatma Gandhi was the father of the nation, certain BJP leaders wanted to build a statue for Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Gandhi. Dalits were also compared to dogs by a Union minister. “Cant the Prime Minister control his ministers making degrading comments?” he questioned.

Reddy said that intolerance in the country needed to be controlled urgently. The PM and the ruling party were supposed to look after the interests of the common people. He said, “From the past 3 months, no scholarship was issued for a research scholar. I was shocked when Minister Smriti Irani said that only the qualified few would be issued scholarships.”

He said that it was unheard of a government to grab lands from farmers for the corporates. It was the duty of the company to purchase the land and not seek it from the government. “Current international prices of petrol are such that petrol should be sold at less than Rs 50 in our country. But the government increases tax on petroleum products as soon as there is a drop in petrol prices at the international level. This will further increase inflation and not benefit the people of the nation,” he said.

Secretary DK and Udupi District CPI B Kukkiyan, State Joint Secretary Sunderesh, Former CPI Secretary Siddana Gowda Patil and state secretary Lokesh were also present.
