Mangaluru: The students of Milagres College staged a protest against their Principal for hitting a student, in front of the college premises here, on September 7.
Speaking to Mangalorean.com, one of the students said that on September 5, Principal John Pais hit a 1st year CEBA student Mirshad and he was hospitalized. In this regard, a case was filed in the Bunder police station.
He further said that after the police complaint, there was no action from the college management against the principal. Earlier, when Mirshad was found loitering around the campus, a lecturer punished him and later the principal hit him. “If we reach the college 5 minutes late, they impose a penalty. Some students come from far away places and when they reach late to the class, they have to pay the penalty,” said the student.
Later, the Correspondent of Milagres Institutions Fr Valerian spoke to the students and said that the complaint has already been filed and justice will be done with Mirshad. The students protested with placards demanding the dismissal of the principal and to provide justice to Mirshad.
A PTA meeting was immediately called to solve the problem. An additional police force was also called to keep the situation under control. Circle Inspector from Bunder police station Shantharama arrived to the college, held a meeting with the parents, students, staff and college administration. NSUI leader Ashith Pereira also reached the college. Later, the students agreed to call off their protest.
ACP Shantharaju said that if any student faces any kind of problem in the college, they can inform the parents and can give in writing to the PTA President or a police officer and the same will be discussed in the PTA meeting.
PTA president Raymond D’Cunha said that the problem has been solved and the students agreed to attend the classes. In future, such incidents will not occur.
Speaking to Mangalorean.com Principal John Pais said, “I have done my best to correct the students. On September 5, we had to stop the Teachers’ day programme because of the behaviour of the students.”
President of District NSUI Ashith Pereira said that the principal has been suspended. “The Bishop and the college administration will hold an enquiry in this case. The management has signed the letter and suspended the principal. In future if there are any issues related to the students, the NSUI will take care of it,” he said.
The Bunder police are investigating the case.
Sad to hear of such an incidence where the Principal ends up hitting the student. Physical violence on students should stop immediately. There are ways to deal with unruly students besides physical punishment. I trust the management of this institution will institute an inquiry and put measures in place to avoid recurrence.

Physical assault on students is not acceptable. The incident would have been immediately branded as ‘moral policing’ if the teacher was from a different community. I’m glad to see a quick compromise and deescalation.
By the way, who is that guy in red t-shirt and blue jeans? Why is he covering his face like one of those troublemakers we see from conflict zones?
