Mangaluru: Nurses are the hospitality of the hospital. Nurses lead very demanding lives. Working with doctors, healing patients and educating the communities are just a few of the responsibilities nurses perform on a daily basis. In fact you could say that nurses are the backbone of our healthcare care system, providing us with the attention and medical care that we need to live health long-lasting lives. Sometimes being a nurse can be exhausting at times, but the knowledge and power to help heal others is what keeps them going in challenging times. And while nurses are strong spirited, positive and focused even they need a little pick me up every once in a while – like complimenting them for their well-done job or appreciating their dedication and commitment to patients and health-care.

Father Muller College of Nursing-Mangaluru, which is one of the top five nursing colleges in the country, accredited ‘A’ grade by NAAC, launched the 19th Annual National Conference ‘NRSICON’15’–“Nursing Research: Pathway to Quality Improvement in Health Care’ under the auspices of Nursing Research Society of India on 29 October 2015 in the Decennial Memorial Hall, Father Muller Medical College- the conference will continue on 30 and 31 October. The programme began with a invocation through audio-video presentation.

Rev Sr Winnifred-the Principal of Fr Muller College of Nursing and also the Organizing Chairperson welcoming the audience said, “This conference is a platform for nurse researchers to disseminate knowledge and evidence based information. The conference has 13 plenary sessions by eminent health care scientists and nurse researchers who will deliberate on latest concepts in health care research. Over 200 delegates from across India/globe have registered, and 70 research paper presentations will be presented by the delegates during the three-day conference”.

Chief guest Dr G Venkatesh addressing the audience said, ” I need to compliment Fr Muller College of Nursing for providing the best training, guidance and education to the nursing students. We should all know that the glory of the hospital depends on how the nurses take care of the patients. Nurses are challenged to expand their practice by offering creative approaches to old and new health problems. In this era with enormous challenges in the health care field, designing new and innovative programmes that make a difference in the health status of our citizens is the need of the hour. It is advisable that Fr Muller College of Nursing start a Nursing Research Cell as a path to quality improvement in health care”.

Dr Usha Ukande speaking said, ” Nursing Research Society of India (NRSI) is a professional body established in 1987 for the promotion of nursing research in India. NRSI has made remarkable progress in the past three decades under the leadership of various nurse leaders. The objectives of NSRI is to support the development of nursing research activities, provide evidence based nursing care, provide a platform to nurse scientists to exchange views on nursing research and disseminate research findings for utilization in the field of health care. This has materialized through the cooperative and collective participation of its members in organizing regular conferences, research activities and publicising the journal of NRSI. I am extremely happy that Fr Muller College of Nursing has come forward to host this conference which will surely benefit all the participants”

Rev Fr Patrick Rodrigues addressing the august gathering said, ” Our College of Nursing has marked its significance with its Silver Jubilee in the year 2012 and is accredited ‘A” grade by NAAC. The institution has a tradition of research for several decades- a glimpse into the past reveals the dedication behind grooming nurses with the noble motto. “Search, Share, Care”. The alumni of the college is spread globally at various levels as educators, administrators and researchers and serving the sick and suffering with the touch of “Heal and Comfort”. upholding the motto of Father Muller Charitable Institutions. The trained nurse has become one of the great blessings of humanity, taking a place beside the physician and the priest. Nurses dispense comfort, compassion, and caring without even a prescription. The character of a nurse is just as important as the knowledge he/she possesses. Constant attention by a good nurse may be just as important as a major operation by a surgeon. I feel proud to say that our institution has provided the best nurses who are serving throughout the nation and abroad, making a difference in the health care.”

A NRSI book authored by Dr Janarthanan B of JIPMER, and also the souvenir were released during the occasion. Vote of thanks was proposed by Chanu Bhattacharya-organizing secretary of NRSICON’15 , and the programme was professionally compered by Darryl Aranha (Asst. professor )and Neethu Ann Koshy-Lecturer, both at Fr Muller College of Nursing. Like always I end this report with Fr Muller Institution Anthem :

“We come to comfort and to heal, to love and serve in woe and weal

We come to comfort and to heal, to love and serve in woe and weal”-Chorus.

Let a mighty chorus swell and soar beyond the skies

As white robed bands with healing hands to daily tasks arise,

And eager limbs await their hour with aching, grim surmise

While fading visions float before half open, gleamless eyes.

Let the name Augustus Muller proudly write in gold

Flame across Karnatak’s vast and Bharat’s millions hold,

In admiration of his zeal whose vision bright & bold

In Mangalore’s fair bosom raised its home of peace untold.

Hail! dear home where tender care beguiles disease and pain

Where love divine inspires & lifts the failing heart or brain.

Live on and grow till human kind its destiny attain

And healing reach on wheels and wings the distant home or plain.

Come, Doctor, live your noble Hippocrate’s bequest

Come, Nurse, by Nightingale inspired, forget your broken rest,

Come all who soothe in ways unsung Humanity’s unrest

Let’s all as one, with love pursue the toil by millions blest.
